Evening Update Monday 8 April

A passenger has been seriously injured while getting off a train at Golfe-Juan station. The 35 year old man apparently fell and severed the lower part of his arm when alighting from the train late last night.  He was rushed to the Pasteur Hospital in Nice. His life is not reported to be in danger.

A suspect has been arrested after the fatal stabbing of a man in La Seyne-sur-Mer on Friday.  The suspect, who is reportedly in his 30’s, was taken into custody over the weekend. Reports say that the stabbing may have been the result of a domestic dispute.

A 58 year old man has died after being taken ill while scuba diving in the Baie of Agay near Saint Raphael. The man suffered a suspected heart attack while diving for sea urchins on Sunday. Rescue workers attempted to revive him after he managed to swim back to the shore but were unable to save him.

6 people have been injured following two accidents on the A8 Motorway in the Var as a result of a sudden hail storm. Conditions quickly became treacherous on the road at around 3pm on Sunday with hail stones covering the surface near the Brignoles interchange. Three vehicles were involved in the first crash which fortunately didn’t cause any injuries but just a couple of minutes later six cars and a motorbike were involved in a collision which resulted in 6 people being injured including a child. All of the injuries were minor although 4 people required hospital treatment.

An illegal meat market was raided by authorities in Nice yesterday. The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi gave details of the operation on his Twitter account. Almost one ton of meat unfit for human consumption was seized in the parking lot of Adoma in the plaine du Var. Various other contraband was also seized in the operation involving 15 municipal police supported by public health officers.

A motorbike rider has been pulled over by police after being clocked at 243 km/h on a road in the Bouches-du-Rhone. The biker had his licence immediately revoked on the spot and his bike impounded.  He will be appearing in court shortly.

BUSINESS


Jaguar Land Rover sold 8.4% more cars in the UK in the last year. The company has shut its UK plants for five days over Brexit in a move planned some months ago. BMW’s UK Mini and Rolls-Royce plants are also closed this week, as is Peugeot’s Vauxhall factory.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission have agreed two Memoranda of Understanding to ensure there is continuity if the UK leaves the European Union. The memoranda cover trade repositories and alternative investment funds

Air France KLM has reported a rise in its March passenger numbers compared with the previous year. The airline said it carried 8.3 million passengers in March, up 3.4% from a year earlier.
The German Federal Statistics Office reported that exports and imports both fell more than expected in February. Seasonally-adjusted exports dropped by 1.3% on the month while imports were down 1.6%.

Online site Pinterest plans to raise up to $1.3bn from investors by selling 75 million shares at between $15 and $17 in an IPO.

 

SPORT

Rugby Union…. The French rugby federation has been ordered to pay former coach Guy Noves 1m euros in compensation for wrongful dismissal. A labour tribunal in Toulouse rejected the governing body's case that Noves was guilty of serious misconduct. He became the first France coach to be sacked when he was dismissed in December 2017.

Munster head coach Johann van Graan will remain with the province until at least 2022 after signing a contract extension. The former South Africa forwards coach has twice led his side to European semi-finals since arriving in 2017.

Football…There’s one Premiership game tonight. Chelsea can climb to third place in the table if they beat West Ham at Stamford Bridge.
