The dramatic resignation marks the latest political crisis for Macron, whose government continues to face mounting challenges in forming a stable administration.

Memorial to honour victims of recent shooting in Nice - A memorial gathering will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, October 8th, at 2 p.m. in Nice's Place Masséna, to honour the victims of the recent shooting in the Moulins district. Organized by the Union of Chechens of France, the event comes three days after gunfire erupted on Friday night, leaving two dead and five injured. Several victims were members of the Chechen community, with authorities noting that some appeared to have no ties to drug trafficking.

Three brothers defraud French social benefits system of €150,000 - Three brothers have been convicted of defrauding France’s Caisse d’Allocations Familiales (CAF), the government agency that provides family and housing benefits, out of €150,000. Allowances were claimed in the Var for children who lived in Tunisia and not in France as required. Despite partial repayments, the court ruled the fraud was intentional and gave them each a six-month suspended sentence.

Nice votes to extend security system - The City of Nice has voted to extend its emergency alert button system to private residential buildings (copropriétés) that volunteer to join the scheme, aiming to improve safety and speed up police response during emergencies. Already installed in schools, hospitals, care homes, public buildings, and some businesses, the alert buttons were triggered over 3,000 times in 2025, resulting in 500 municipal police interventions. Residents or property managers in Nice interested in installing the system can contact city services for support.

Princess Caroline of Hanover and Princess Stéphanie of Monaco receive French national honours - Princess Caroline of Hanover and Princess Stéphanie of Monaco have been awarded high French national honours in a ceremony at the Prince’s Palace here in Monaco. Princess Caroline was awarded the Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit and Princess Stéphanie was named an Officer of the Legion of Honour. The awards highlight the strong ties between Monaco and France and celebrate the sisters’ significant contributions to social and cultural causes.

Breast Cancer awareness month - With Breast Cancer awareness month underway, the Princely Government of Monaco is urging women to prioritize early detection, emphasizing that screening saves lives. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths, affecting one in eight women in their lifetime. Early diagnosis improves outcomes significantly, with 60% of cases caught early and an 87% five-year survival rate in France. The government’s message is clear: “Do not wait — get screened.” Monaco joins the global Pink October campaign to raise awareness and encourage women to act promptly.

Minibus overturns on A8 near Cannes, causing major traffic delays - A minibus carrying 12 people has overturned on the A8 motorway near Le Cannet, between Antibes and Cannes. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon and according to emergency services two people suffered minor injuries, and 10 were unharmed. The incident caused nearly an hour of traffic delays.

Fake Irish Lord sentenced to five years in prison – Finally, a man posing as an Irish lord has been sentenced to five years in prison for scamming French actor Dany Boon out of €4.8 million. The fraudster, who managed Boon’s sailboat and convinced him to invest in a complex financial scheme, was ordered to repay the money with interest. The scammer and his ex-wife also face money laundering charges in Monaco. Arrested in Panama in 2024, he was extradited to France and is now held in Nice.

Business

European markets stabilized on Monday after early losses sparked by the shock resignation of French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu were offset by a rally in semiconductor stocks. Luxury and banking stocks were hit hardest, with LVMH and Hermès all sliding more than 2.3%, while BNP Paribas and Société Générale dropped 4.2% and 3.2% respectively.

And - French prosecutors have launched an investigation into Apple’s voice assistant Siri following a complaint alleging illegal data collection. The investigation has been assigned to a specialised cybercrime unit. Apple has not yet publicly responded to the investigation.

Rugby - Former England rugby captain Lewis Moody has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), prompting an outpouring of support from across the sporting world.

Football - Harry Kane has revealed he is open to extending his stay at Bayern Munich, indicating his desire to remain in Germany beyond his current contract, which runs until 2027.

A man has been sentenced in New Zealand for inappropriate behavior after kissing and touching his girlfriend "excessively" during an Air New Zealand flight in November 2024. The couple’s actions disturbed other passengers on the Auckland to Nelson flight. Despite a flight attendant’s warning to stop, the couple continued their affectionate behavior, both were arrested by police. The man, with 21 prior convictions, received six months of home detention with a curfew and one year of probation. His girlfriend faces charges as well.
