PM Lecornu resigns - French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has resigned today, just weeks after his appointment. Amid mounting criticism over his newly announced government, Cannes mayor David Lisnard had threatened to quit Les Republicains party. His departure has triggered a political crisis, with David Lisnard demanding President Macron’s resignation and far-right RN leader Jordan Bardella calling for the dissolution of the National Assembly and new elections.

Jean-Pierre Rivère joins Eric Ciotti - Former OGC Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivère has joined Éric Ciotti’s UDR-RN list for the 2026 Nice municipal elections and could become first deputy mayor if Ciotti wins. Rivère, a local entrepreneur, says he wants to unite the Niçois, improve sports facilities, and apply business principles to city management.

Major wildfires in Corsica under control - Two major wildfires in Northern Corsica, which destroyed over 435 hectares near Saint-Florent and Oletta, are now under control with no casualties or homes damaged. Around 230 firefighters remain on site as investigations continue into the suspected human cause of the blazes.

Solo trailer needed rescue - A solo sailor en route from Cannes to Marseille was rescued safely after sending a distress signal, triggering a large search and rescue operation off the Var coast. The man was found over 40 km south of Cap Camarat and airlifted to a Toulon hospital. The cause of the distress call remains unknown.

Memorial this Wednesday - A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday in Nice to honour the victims of a shooting in the Moulins district that killed two and injured five. The Chechen community, deeply affected by the attack, is calling for a moment of remembrance and a stand against violence.

Exotic Garden's repopening delayed to early 2026 - The Exotic Garden in Monaco, closed for renovations since 2020, will now reopen in the first quarter of 2026 due to delays in materials and budgeting, despite earlier plans for summer 2025. Meanwhile, Monaco’s municipal council also approved a budget surplus of €7.3 million for the creation of a new “Live by Léo Ferré” performance hall opening in spring 2026, and the return of the ice rink for winter 2025–2026.

Monaco's Condamine Market renovations - Renovation work at Monaco’s Condamine market will begin mid-January 2026 for 13 months, with traders temporarily relocated to free, fully equipped kiosks at Place d’Armes. While rent-free relocation is welcomed, concerns remain over lost revenue, the closure of longtime bar Le Zinc, and potential future price increases.

Mercantour National park earns the “Starred Towns and Villages” label​ - The Mercantour National Park and 12 of its communes have earned the “Starred Towns and Villages” label for reducing light pollution and saving energy through responsible nighttime lighting. Princess Caroline of Hanover received the Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit, and Princess Stéphanie was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour.

Three car collision leads to massive traffic jams on the Voie Pierre Mathis in Nice - A three-car collision on Nice’s Voie Pierre Mathis this afternoon has left one vehicle overturned near Nice-Thiers station. Two people suffered minor injuries, and the accident caused major traffic jams during rush hour.
 

BUSINESS
The UK government has unveiled plans to reform the home-buying process by requiring sellers to provide key property details upfront, aiming to cut costs, delays, and failed sales. The changes could save buyers £710 on average and speed up transactions by up to four weeks.

And - Rite Aid, once one of the largest US pharmacy chains with 5,000 stores, has permanently closed all remaining locations after years of financial trouble and legal battles over opioid prescriptions. The bankrupt company thanked customers online and provided a link for accessing pharmacy records.

Racing - After more than three days of racing, the Monteux Backyard Ultra ended today at dawn, with Christophe Rouat setting a new French record of 86 laps (576 km). Annie Paringaux also broke the French women’s record with 63 laps (420 km).
