The massive risk from plastic exposed at the Monaco Ocean Week - For the first time, world-renowned health, ocean and environmental researchers have collaborated to quantify the massive risks plastic poses to all life on earth and the results have been revealed during this week’s Monaco Ocean Week which is on until Sunday 26th March.

The Minderoo-Monaco Commission on Plastics and Human Health presented on Tuesday morning an unprecedented analysis showing that plastic constitutes a danger at each stage of its life cycle. The main conclusions of the committee are as follows: Plastic causes disease, disability and premature mortality at every stage of its life cycle, with health impacts disproportionately affecting vulnerable, low-income and minority communities, especially children. Toxic chemicals added to plastic and regularly detected in humans are, among other things, known to increase the risk of miscarriage, obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Plastic waste is everywhere and the ocean, on which we depend for oxygen, food and livelihoods, suffers disproportionately, with plastic micro and nanoparticles contaminating the water and seabed and entering the marine food chain.

Following the results, the Minderoo-Monaco Commission is suggesting the establishment of health-protective standards for plastic chemicals under the Global Plastics Treaty. It is not a coincidence that the commission chose the Monaco Ocean Week to launch its report, as HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco has and continues, to go to great lengths to put the oceans, and ecosystems, on the international agenda.
