President Macron has confirmed that voluntary national service will be introduced in France. Speaking during a visit to the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade in the Isere department today, he said that the new National Service is designed to meet the needs of the armed forces. Each individual’s service will last ten months with the core age group being 18 and 19 year olds. They will be paid a minimum of 800 euros per month and accommodation and food will also be provided. The government is aiming to have 10,000 people per year involved by 2030 and 50,000 by 2035.

Healthcare professionals in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes have announced that they will be taking industrial action on December 3. They are protesting at the provisions of next year’s Social Security Finance Bill. A gathering is planned in the Place Garibaldi in Nice. 

French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin has been in Grasse today to visit the prison and the judicial court. Although the purpose of the visit was not disclosed, it’s believed that discussions included potential steps to alleviate overcrowding in the prison and violence suffered by prison officers. The minister is meeting union leaders during the visit.

Two men have escaped from prison in Dijon after sawing through the bars of their cell. The prison is one of six recently selected by the government to receive improved security measures such as mobile phone jammers, anti-drone devices and video surveillance. Union leaders have said that drones carrying saw blades have been seen flying over the prison.

Illegally obtained data from a French shooting association has been used to commit burglaries and steal weapons, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office. The personal data of one million current and former members of the French Shooting Federation was stolen by hackers last month.

Motorists in France are going to be paying more at the pumps in the New Year, according to a trade body. The French Union of Petroleum Industries said that fuel prices will go up by about 4 to 6 cents per litre from 1 January because of increased costs related to a government energy saving scheme.

The Monaco government has warned against an increase in phishing attempts. The phishing operations use emails, SMS and phone calls impersonating banks and payment services to obtain confidential information. Recipients may be asked to provide usernames, passwords or bank card numbers by clicking on a link leading to a fake but authentic-looking website. The government said that suspected phishing attempts should be forwarded to cyber@gouv.mc  It said that it is strongly recommended not to reply to the sender but to contact your financial institution directly to inquire if the communication is genuine.

Archaeologists have unearthed a Roman crematorium in the Var. The site, near Hyeres, has yielded artefacts including a vase and a glass perfume vial dating from the first to third centuries. Roadworks in the area have been suspended whilst the excavation takes place.
