A homeless man accused of firing a shot which seriously injured another homeless person in Nice has appeared in court. The man in his fifties claimed that the shooting was accidental. The prosecutor said in a statement that CCTV footage from the scene shows that the accused reached into a bag to retrieve a handgun “without any context of violence or argument” and a shot was fired whilst he had the weapon in his hand. The victim, who is in his thirties, suffered a wound to the head and remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Seven people have received prison sentences of between two and three years after being arrested in the Moulins district of Nice in June. They were convicted of various narcotics offences and criminal conspiracy.

A French rapper is set to stand trial because of an alleged reference to the Promenade des Anglais terrorist attack of 2016 in one of his songs. The Nice prosecutor’s office said that Freeze Corleone will be tried for “apology for terrorism” next February. 

The Var prefecture has published the latest figures on road accidents in the department. From January 1st to October 31st, a total of 56 people lost their lives on the roads of the Var, including 20 on motorbikes, 22 in cars and 7 pedestrians.

A teenager has been taken into custody after a flour bomb was thrown at the leader of the National Rally party, Jordan Bardella. The incident happened during a walkabout at an agricultural fair in the Haute-Saone. According to police, the suspect is a 17 years old local.

Four more people have been arrested in connection with the burglary at the Louvre museum in Paris last month. The two men and two women are all from the Paris region. Four other people have already been charged with offences, according to the local prosecutor. The items stolen in the burglary still haven’t been recovered.

The city of Marseille is seeking damages in a civil court action against three landlords who it claims have been operating short-term rentals in contravention of regulations concerning furnished tourist accommodation. The city is seeking a total of 2.4 million euros in penalties. The judgement is expected to be announced in February.

The French government has sent a letter to local prefects asking them to prioritise housing for women who are the victims of domestic violence. The aim of the move is to enable women who are forced to leave their home because of violence to have immediate access to emergency accommodation. Yesterday, 25 November, was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The body of a student has been discovered at a school in Bordeaux. The 17 year old, who was a boarder at the school, was found outside a building by maintenance workers yesterday morning. Classes were cancelled for the day and a support unit was set up for students and staff. The public prosecutor said that an inquiry has been opened to establish the cause of death.

A statue of Thomas Pesquet has been recovered after being stolen earlier this month. The 1.8 metre high statue of the French astronaut had disappeared from an educational trail on Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse department only a few days after being installed. A hunter found the statue on the edge of a vineyard in a nearby village.
