President Macron has announced a ban on mobile phones in French high schools. The President highlighted the dangers of screen addiction and said that school is “where you learn and it’s where you communicate”. The new measures will take effect from the start of the next school year.

French authorities have said that they will soon take additional steps to stop migrants attempting to cross the English Channel. The Maritime Prefecture of The Channel And The North Sea said that control and intervention operations at sea will take place before migrants board the small boats frequently used in crossings.

President Macron has said that he wishes to see the introduction of legislation which would make possible the immediate blocking of false information or information which is “offensive” to a person’s dignity on social media. He said that he wishes to see legislation in place as soon as possible and has asked his government to provide a report by the end of the year.

One of the prisoners who escaped from prison in Dijon yesterday by sawing through the bars of his cell has been recaptured. Another prisoner remains at large.

Telecoms company Orange has reportedly closed an office in Marseille for two weeks because of drugs related violence in the surrounding area. Unions said that for several days the site in the third arrondissement has “been at the centre of a confrontation between two rival gangs”. It said that employees had been confined to the site on several occasions. Local police have called the situation “difficult” but have denied that the problems in the locality are caused by rival drugs gangs. Corinne Simon, the deputy police prefect for the Bouches-du-Rhone, is scheduled to visit the site next week.

An anti-mining operation took place earlier today in waters off the coast of Toulon. Certain nautical activities were restricted in Toulon harbour during the operation.

The National Police have conducted a large-scale traffic control operation in Cagnes-sur-Mer and Saint Laurent du Var. 361 vehicles were checked, resulting in 173 fines being issued and 3 vehicles impounded.

The 3rd Franco-Italian Cooperation Symposium has taken place in Ventimiglia, bringing together local officials from both sides of the border. The meeting focused on creating a new European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation to support closer cross-border collaboration. It aims to make daily commutes easier for cross-border workers, improve water management, boost the local economy, encourage bilingualism, and promote shared culture and heritage. French and Italian authorities say they will continue working closely together.

A police officer has saved the life of a horse trapped in a ditch in the Alpes de Haute Provence. The officer was walking his dog before starting his shift when he made the discovery. The animal was suffering from hypothermia in below freezing temperatures. Lifting equipment was brought in and the horse was returned to its owner shortly afterwards.
