Saved Brown Grouper in Monaco

Found weakened in the Larvotto reserve almost two years ago, a young brown grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) was taken in and cared for by teams from Monaco's Oceanographic Museum. Once a victim of poaching and overfishing, this emblematic species has been protected for 30 years by strong conservation measures, enabling its populations to recover in the Mediterranean Sea. Now fully recovered, the juvenile grouper returned to its natural habitat on June 3, joining its congeners.

In the early afternoon, the boat left Port Hercule, bound for the cliffside of the Oceanographic Museum. On board, Céline Caron, Government Councillor, Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Planning; Valérie Davenet, Director of the Environment for the Government of Monaco; Robert Calcagno, Director General of the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco; and Stéphanie Orengo, Veterinary Officer at the Oceanographic Museum. After checking the water parameters and temperature, and carrying out a water change to acclimatize the young grouper, Olivier Brunel, Head of the Aquarium Department at the Oceanographic Museum, and Maëva Faissat, Aquariologist at the Oceanographic Museum, in charge of the young grouper's care since its arrival, returned it to the sea. At a depth of 5 meters, in the rocks at the foot of the Oceanographic Museum, this species, which appreciates coastal rocky environments rich in crevices and cavities, has found an ideal habitat.
