Monaco Archbishop Weighs in on Abortion Legalisation Debate

Monaco Archbishop Weighs in on Abortion Legalisation Debate – The Archbishop of Monaco, Dominique-Marie Jean Michel David, has expressed his concerns and thoughts on the ongoing debate regarding the potential legalization of abortion in the Principality. A bill is being considered by the National Council, with plans to vote on it in the spring. Despite acknowledging the delicacy of the subject, the archbishop emphasizes the Catholic Church's longstanding position against abortion and cautions against the potential destabilizing effects such a change in the law could have on the country, where Catholicism is the state religion. Dominique-Marie Jean Michel David who has served as the Archbishop of Monaco since 2021, has spoken to local media and explained that he finds it surprising that the issue is being brought up again, especially after two prior legislative changes in 2009 and 2019. These amendments already decriminalized abortion in extreme cases, such as rape, fetal malformations, or threats to the mother’s health. The archbishop questions whether the current legal framework has been fully explored before making further changes. He highlighted the importance of preserving Monaco's identity and maintaining a balanced and reflective approach to such debates. He believes that thoughtful, serene discussions are necessary to preserve Monaco's unity and ensure that difficult issues like abortion are addressed in a manner that respects both the values of the Church and the broader societal context.
