A truck has collided with a tram in Nice this morning. The accident, on Line 1 of the tramway on Avenue Jean Medecin, happened at about 9.30am. Four people were hospitalised with minor injuries and the tram suffered damage to several windows and a door. Tram traffic was interrupted but has now returned to normal.

A man who died in Marseille from gunshot wounds yesterday afternoon was the target of a contract killing, according to the local prosecutor. The 20 year old was the brother of a prominent environmental activist and anti-drugs gang figure in Marseille and the prosecutor has indicated that this may be one of the possible motives for the killing.

Two-way traffic is set to be reinstated on the Quai des Etats Unis in Nice. Part of the road was converted to a one-way system in 2020 to create cycle lanes. The Nice administrative court has rejected an appeal by the city of Nice in which they sought to keep the one-way system. Nice mayor Christian Estrosi has said that a schedule for the required works will be announced in the next few days.

There has been a decrease in fatalities on French roads. According to government agency Securite Routiere, deaths fell by 13% in October compared to the same month last year. 276 people lost their lives on the roads of metropolitan France in the month.

Around 54 French departments are in a state of “near bankruptcy” according to the president of the French departments association. Francois Sauvadet called for central government to contribute 600 million euros in support to the departments. The association is holding its annual gathering today in the presence of French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu.

Monaco has taken part in the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly in Riyadh. The Principality was represented by Ambassador to UN Tourism, Catherine Fautrier Rousseau, and Isabelle Tello from the Tourism and Congresses Directorate. The session highlighted the growing global importance of tourism, now accounting for around 11% of global GDP and which has shown strong recovery post-pandemic. The Assembly also focused on artificial intelligence and its potential to support innovation and local businesses.

It looks like we’re in for some unsettled weather on the Riviera over the weekend. Meteo France has yellow warnings for storms tomorrow, in the Var in the early morning and all day in the Alpes-Maritimes. The storms are expected to continue into Sunday.
