All football matches in the Alpes-Maritimes postponed amid orange weather alert - All football fixtures scheduled for Sunday in the Alpes-Maritimes were postponed after the department was placed on an orange alert for heavy rain and flooding. District president Alain Broche confirmed that every match would be rescheduled, as local authorities are required to close their stadiums under the alert. Poor weather conditions made play impossible across the department.

Storms, hail and strong winds: severe weather in Alpes-Maritimes and Var - Intense thunderstorms hit the region over the weekend. Gusts of up to 60 km/h were reported along the coast, particularly near Antibes and Théoule-sur-Mer, with storms continuing into the evening. In the Var, placed on yellow alert, severe storms were followed by intense showers later in the day and winds exceeding 60 km/h were reported along the shoreline.

HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco urges caution on Monaco–Nice–Ventimiglia metro proposal - Prince Albert II has struck a cautious tone over renewed calls for a metro line linking Nice, Monaco and Ventimiglia, saying the Principality cannot “take the initiative” without France’s full support. Speaking to Monaco-Matin ahead of Monaco’s National Day on Wednesday 19th November, he noted that most of the route would lie on French soil and require major financing from Paris. The project was revived by Monaco’s business community after heavy traffic disruption on the Moyenne Corniche in September. But the prince said Monaco should first focus on improving existing rail services, park-and-ride schemes and bus links, while making walking routes more attractive. He also reacted to Éric Ciotti’s proposal for a Monaco-linked free-trade zone in France. Although calling the idea “interesting”, he stressed that only the French government can authorise it and that Monaco has not been formally approached. With French local elections approaching, he advised setting such proposals aside “for now.”

Nice tightens rules on Airbnb-style rentals - Nice has approved a new set of measures further restricting short-term tourist rentals, complicating life for Airbnb hosts in the city. The regulations were unanimously adopted at the municipal council meeting on Friday 14 November. Mayor Christian Estrosi first announced the tougher stance in late 2024, aiming to curb the rapid growth of short-term tourism lets and ease pressure on local housing. The newly validated measures form part of a wider arsenal designed to limit the expansion of Airbnb-type properties, though full details are yet to be rolled out publicly. The vote marks another step in Nice’s ongoing effort to regulate short-term rentals as housing affordability and neighbourhood impact remain central concerns for the city.

Nice Airport among France’s worst for delays and cancellations in 2025 - Nice Côte d’Azur Airport has recorded some of the highest levels of disruption in France this year, according to passenger-rights firm Flightright. It ranks second nationally for delayed departures, just behind Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle. Between 1 January and 27 October 2025, 38% of Nice’s 55,275 flights left late — more than one in three. The airport also tops the national list for cancellations, with 709 flights scrapped, or 1.28%. Flightright notes that delays of more than 15 minutes are increasingly common across France, affecting over 30% of flights in major airports. Longer delays can entitle passengers to compensation of up to €600. Nice Airport president Franck Goldnadel recently blamed the ongoing disruption on air-traffic control issues, citing staff shortages at the Aix-en-Provence control centre.

France to expand anti-waste measures in 2026 and 2027 - France’s wide-ranging anti-waste law will introduce new restrictions over the next two years as the country continues its shift away from single-use plastics and environmentally harmful products. From 2026, cosmetic items containing microplastics — including shampoos, hair dyes and makeup removers — will be banned from sale. The measure will extend to detergents in 2027. Most provisions of the 2020 law are already in force. Recent steps include the 2025 ban on plastic wrapping for newspapers and magazines, and the end of plastic food-heating containers in maternity and paediatric units. Earlier measures introduced between 2021 and 2024 range from compulsory access to composting facilities and bans on plastic tea bags and fruit-and-veg wrapping, to the end of disposable tableware in fast-food restaurants and the expansion of repair bonuses for electronics, clothing and shoes. The overall aim is to cut waste, reduce reliance on plastics and encourage longer-lasting, repairable products as France moves toward a circular economy.
