Gunshots in the centre of Nice – Local media Nice Matin has reported this morning that gunshots have been heard in the centre of town. The shots were heard around 9am this morning creating a scene of panic in the city centre.
The mayor of Nice tweeted that the “shots were heard following a knife attack in the Notre-Dame area” and one man has been arrested by police. The mayor has asked people to avoid the area.
The mayor has confirmed a "terrorist attack" in which one person has been killed and several people injured.
A minute's silence has just been held at the National Assembly, in tribute to the victim of the knife attack in front of the Notre-Dame basilica in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes). The meeting is suspended.
