A 33 year old man has been arrested in connection with the death of a woman and her four children in the Seine-et-Marne department near Paris. The bodies of the mother and her children, who were between 9 months and ten years old, were discovered in their apartment after the alarm was raised by a concerned neighbour. The local prosecutor said that there was a scene of "extreme violence" when police entered the apartment. The apartment showed no signs of a break-in. The arrested man is the woman's husband and father of the children. He is currenty hospitalised with injuries to his hand. An investigation has been opened.

A man in his forties has been fatally shot in Marseille. The incident, which is believed to be drugs related, happened on the rue de Lyon in the city's 15th arrondissement.

Several dozen firefighters attended a blaze in the centre of Nice yesterday. Several buildings were affected by the fire on rue Biscarra, just off Avenue Jean Medecin. Smoke could be seen over a wide area. No injuries were reported.

The body of a man has been discovered in a building in central Nice. National police attended the scene in an underground car park on avenue Henri Durant. Investigations are continuing.

Tram services in Nice were disrupted yesterday morning  after an accident between the CADAM stop and Nice Cote d'Azur Airport. Deputy mayor Gael Nofri said that the accident happened when an ambulance without flashing lights crossed a red traffic light. A replacement bus service was put in place beween CADAM and the airport. No injuries were reported and services returned to normal later in the day.

A man has been arrested after barracading himself in a house and opening fire on police in the Pas-de-Calais department. Several gendarmes received slight gunshot injures. The man in his thirties, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, had barracaded himself in his parent's house in the village of Blessy. A specilalist CIGN unit attended the scene but the man eventually surrended without them taking action.

 

BUSINESS

Maersk, one of the world's biggest sea transportation companies, has said that it's preparing to resume shipping operations through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. An international military operation is taking place to prevent attacks on commercial ships by Houthi rebels from Yemen. Several major companies have temporarily stopped shipments via the Red Sea following the attacks.

New figures have shown that the UK's network of public electric vehicle chargers expanded significiantly this year. According to Zapmap, at the end of November there were just over 53,000 electric vehicle charging points across the UK, across almost 31,000 charging locations. That represents a 46% increase in the total number of charging devices since November 2022. The company said that the figures do not include the many charge points installed at home or at workplace locations, which are estimated to be more than 680,000.

Rugby Union... Scotland player Darcy Graham has signed a new three-year contract at Edinburgh which runs through until 2027. He's currently joint second in the rankings of all-time number of tries scored by Scotland players.
