The French government has announced a prohibition on mobile phone use in six prisons. Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said that the “zero mobile phone” plan will be trialled in the six institutions, starting today. He said that jamming technology will be installed at a cost of four to five million euros per prison.

Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon will attend a silent march being held in Marseille tomorrow in memory of Mehdi Kessaci who was murdered in the city last week.  He was the brother of a prominent anti-drugs trafficking figure. An investigation has been opened for “murder by an organized gang” and “criminal conspiracy”. Several other gatherings are planned across France tomorrow, including at the Paris town hall.

The publication date of Nicolas Sarkosy’s new book, entitled “Diary of a Prisoner”, has been announced. The former French President was imprisoned in Paris between 21 October and 10 November after being convicted of offences in connection with the alleged Libyan financing of his election campaign. The book is scheduled for release on 10 December.

It’s been announced that a snowboarding event in Isola has been cancelled. They mayor of Isola said that the Snowboard Cross World Cup event, which was scheduled for January, has been cancelled “to preserve the sporting integrity, the image of the resort and respect for the ethical commitments to which we are collectively attached” and added that an issue was the sponsor of the international event, which is the Azerbaijan Tourist Board. An alternative snowboarding event will now be held in the resort on the same weekend.

Two hundred cars have been destroyed in a fire at a scrapyard in the Vaucluse department. The blaze in the facility, which covers several hectares, broke out last night. Arson is suspected.

Nice city council has announced that works will begin on Monday to convert the Quai des Etats Unis and Quai Lunel back to two way traffic. It follows the Administrative Court of Appeal’s decision last week to reject an appeal by the city to keep the one-way system.

A new project director for the Nice Police Headquarters has been appointed. Johan Porcher is currently Chief of Staff to the Prefect of Haute-Marne. He will assume his new role on December 1. The new police headquarters in Nice is scheduled for completion in October 2026 at a total cost of €243 million.
