French police arrest teenager suspected of plotting an attack - A Chechen teenager has been arrested by French police suspected of plotting an “Islamist-inspired” attack on a football game during this summer’s Olympics. France’s interior ministry said that the domestic intelligence agency DGSI arrested an 18-year-old of Chechen origin in Saint-Étienne on Friday calling it the “first foiled attack against the Olympic Games”. France is on its highest alert level for attacks before the Paris Games, for which about 10 million visitors and 10,000 athletes are expected. The events will mainly take place in the capital but other towns and cities around France will host some sports and individual games.

Culture Minister calls for sanctions - France’s Culture Minister Rachida Dati has said she wants to create a new criminal sanction for attacks on works of art. Dati comments came at the weekend after a painting by Claude Monet at the Musée d'Orsay was targeted, without being damaged, by an environmental activist.

Hang gliding accident - A 75-year-old man has been seriously injured following a hang-gliding incident in Gréolières on Saturday. Emergency services intervened at around 1.30pm and the man was taken to hospital in Nice. The cause of the accident is yet to be determined.

Lifeguard stations - Two new lifeguard stations have opened on the beach in Nice this weekend. The stations are open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Last year, 140 lifeguards were present on a daily basis on the Riviera from June to September making swimming safer from Menton to Vallauris.

International footballer victim of violent theft in Cannes - An international footballer has been the victim of the violent theft of his luxury watch in Cannes. The footballer who plays for a top 5 team in the English Premier league was targeted in the early hours of Sunday morning on the square in front of the Majestic Barrière Hotel on the Croisette, where he was planning to spend a few days’ vacation. Police have opened an investigation.

Weather warning - Météo-France has placed the Alpes Maritimes on a yellow weather warning with storms forecast this afternoon. With bright sunshine across the region to start with the risk of storms is forecast from 3pm. The warning is in place until 7pm this Monday evening. 

Business

Several changes came into force in France on the 1st of June including an increase in the price of gas, a ban on the sale of CBD and a new platform created to help high school students find internships. There will also be a simplification of medical procedures which aims to free up doctor’s time by allowing Pharmacists to issue prescriptions for antibiotics for the treatment of certain illnesses.

And - Ticketmaster owner Live Nation has confirmed "unauthorised activity" on its database after a group of hackers said they had stolen the personal details of 560 million customers. The group claiming responsibility, says the stolen data includes names, addresses, phone numbers and partial credit card details from Ticketmaster users worldwide and is reportedly demanding a $500,000 (£400,000) ransom payment to prevent the data from being sold to other parties. The number of customers affected by the data breach has not been confirmed by Live Nation.

Rugby League – Kevin Sinfield has paid an emotional tribute to Rob Burrow, describing his former team-mate who has died aged 41 as a "beacon of hope and inspiration". Rugby league legend Burrow passed away on Sunday following a four-and-a-half-year battle with motor neurone disease (MND).  Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in 2019, two years after retiring from a 17-year career in which he won eight Super League titles, and worked tirelessly to raise awareness around the condition. He was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List in 2021 for his services to MND and to the sport. As friends and former Leeds team-mates, Sinfield and Burrow raised millions together for charity to raise awareness and fund research into MND.

Football – French striker Kylian Mbappe has signed a contract to join Real Madrid on a free transfer when his Paris St-Germain deal expires on 30 June. 25-year-old Mbappe, 25, will move to Spain when the La Liga transfer window opens on 1 July. Madrid are expected to announce the deal next week. Mbappe, a World Cup winner in 2018, is PSG's record goal scorer with 256 goals since he joined them from Monaco on an initial loan in 2017.

In other football news, Everton’s former striker Kevin Campbell is said to be "very unwell" in hospital. The club said that the 54-year-old, who began his career at Arsenal, became ill last week. In a statement posted on X Everton wrote - "Not just a great footballer but an incredible person, Kevin is, and always has been, a fighter and we wish him and his family well at this challenging time. Sending all our love”.

Rugby Union – France’s legend Antoine Dupont has inspired his country to a Sevens World Series win in Madrid. The French ran three tries past favourites Argentina to win the final 19-5. After waiting 19 years for a Sevens title, France have now won two of the five tournaments since Toulouse scrum-half Dupont joined the squad from the 15-a-side team.
