France to officially recognise Palestinian state in September, Macron Says – French President Emmanual Macron has announced that France will officially recognise the State of Palestine in September, making it the first G7 nation to do so. The formal declaration will be made during the UN General Assembly in New York. In a statement on X, Macron said the move aims to support peace and end the Gaza conflict. "We need an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and massive humanitarian aid," he wrote, also calling for Hamas's demilitarisation and recognition of Israel.

Palestinian officials welcomed the decision, calling it a step toward justice. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned it as a reward for terrorism, citing the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. The US also criticised the move as "reckless," according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio. More than 140 UN member states currently recognise Palestine, though key Western allies like the US and UK do not. Saudi Arabia and Hamas praised France’s decision, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said recognition must follow a ceasefire and renewed push for a two-state solution. The Gaza war has killed over 59,000 people, according to the territory's health ministry, and triggered warnings of mass starvation by aid groups.

Stéphane Munos, a history and archaeology enthusiast, found the prehistoric tracks during a family walk. The mystery of who walked here a million years ago now awaits expert investigation.

The European Union says a deal on trade tariffs with the US is "within reach," as a 1 August deadline looms and President Donald Trump threatens to impose a sweeping 30% levy on EU imports. EU diplomats have indicated the US may be open to a compromise 15% tariff. However, the White House has downplayed speculation, insisting only the president can confirm a deal. Trump has said he will drop the 30% tariff threat only if the EU agrees to open its markets to American businesses. The EU is preparing €93bn in countermeasures if no agreement is reached, including tariffs on cars, whiskey, and aircraft parts. Meanwhile, ECB President Christine Lagarde urged an end to the uncertainty, and French business leaders warned that a trade war could seriously damage key industries.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has approved the $8 billion (£5.9bn) merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media, clearing the way for a major shake-up in Hollywood. The deal, first announced in 2024, brings together the historic studio behind CBS with the rising independent film company Skydance. FCC chair Brendan Carr confirmed the decision on Thursday, praising Skydance’s plans to implement “significant changes” at CBS. The approval follows Paramount’s recent $16 million settlement with President Trump over a CBS interview featuring former Vice President Kamala Harris.

And Finally…

In one of the more creative bids for Tour de France glory, a 31-year-old amateur cyclist from Montélimar tried to steal the spotlight at the end of stage 17, by jumping the barrier and attempting to cross the finish line before the actual race leader. Dressed head-to-toe like a pro, the prankster shouted, “I’m going to win the race!”, just moments before being dramatically tackled by security and flattened onto the pavement. His grand Tour dreams were over in about 20 metres. The man was taken into custody, and while Jonathan Milan took the real stage win, the internet gave this faux-cyclist a solid gold medal in public humiliation.
