Two people injured following shooting in Nice - Two people have been injured following a shooting in Nice on Thursday. The incident occurred in the northeast of the city at about 1.15pm. Two people have been arrested. Following the gunfire the mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi, praised the work of police officers and emergency services on X. Believed to be a drug related incident, the mayor also once again, asked the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes to take “firm action” against the known drug trafficking in the area.

Alpes-Maritimes Communes in Natural Disaster State - Three communes have been officially recognized as being in a state of natural disaster after severe storms in March 2024, allowing affected residents to claim insurance compensation in the Alpes-Maritimes. The declaration applies to flooding and mudslides in Auribeau-sur-Siagne, Le Bar-sur-Loup, and La Gaude. Affected residents have 30 days to file their claims with insurers. 

Mosquito controls - The regional health agency of the Vaucluse has carried out mosquito controls on public roads and in private gardens after ten cases of dengue fever were detected in the region. The illness is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes to humans, most often benign, which can develop, in about 1% of cases, into a more serious form causing bleeding.

Busy weekend on the roads in France - Bison Futé has announced another difficult weekend on the roads. Saturday has been classified as red throughout France. From today traffic is expected to increase as holiday makers start to head home. The A7 motorway, located in the Rhone Valley along with the A8 and the A9 motorways are also expected to be busy until late evening today and through until Sunday evening.

Paralympic flame to pass through Antibes this weekend - Finally, the Paralympic flame will be passing through Antibes this Sunday ahead of the Games which begin on August 28th in Paris. Antibes is the only town in the Alpes-Maritimes and one of 12 cities in France to host the flame as 23 individual torchbearers and a collective relay of 24 runners will cover 4 kilometres in the heart of the old town from 3.30pm.

Friends and colleagues of 59-year-old British businessman Mike Lynch have paid tribute to "the UK's greatest tech entrepreneur" after he was confirmed to have died when a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily. Mr Lynch was among those killed when the vessel was hit by stormy weather early on Monday. The bodies of five others have been recovered, and a seventh person, believed to be Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah, is still missing. He was a prominent figure in the UK tech industry, where his backing of successful companies led to him being dubbed the British equivalent of Microsoft founder Bill Gates. However, he later became embroiled in a long-running legal dispute which resulted in him being controversially extradited to the US, before being acquitted in June.


Figures published on Thursday have shown that the Paris Olympics have provided a boost to the eurozone economy after a sharp rise in spending as athletes and spectators descended on the French capital for the summer sporting event. French private sector output rose to its highest level in 17 months in August and experts have said that the growth in activity, fuelled by the French service sector bolstered the figures for the entire 27-country bloc.

The World’s second-largest diamond ever found has been unearthed in Botswana at a mine owned by a Canadian firm. Botswana's government said it was the largest diamond ever discovered in the southern African state. The previous biggest discovery in Botswana was a 1,758-carat stone found at the same mine in 2019. Botswana is one of the world's biggest producer of diamonds, accounting for about 20% of global production.

Football – Ipswich are to sign forward Jack Clarke from Sunderland for an initial fee of £15m, plus £5m in potential add-ons.

The 23-year-old, who has scored 27 goals in 94 appearances for Sunderland since signing permanently from Tottenham, is set to have a medical with Ipswich today.

Meanwhile, in the Premier League this weekend. Tomorrow Brighton are at home to Manchester United in the lunch time game. With a 4pm kick off French time Crystal Palace play West Ham, Fulham face Leicester City, Manchester City play Ipswich, Southampton play Nottingham Forest, Tottenham are at home to Everton and at 6.30pm Aston Villa play Arsenal. On Sunday Bournemouth play Newcastle, Wolverhampton play Chelsea and Liverpool are at home to Brentford.

Cycling - Australia's Ben O'Connor has claimed a stunning solo victory on stage six of the Vuelta a Espana to take the leader's red jersey.
