A highly critical report into the operation of border facilities for migrants in Menton has been released today. Inspectors carried out an unannounced visit to the border crossing back in February. The report said that facilities in which migrants are held are unsuitable in many respects and are overcrowded, with detainees also given insufficient information about their rights. The report said that 80% of detentions of migrants took place at the Menton-Garavan train station.

The lives of two of the victims of yesterday’s vehicle attack on the Ile d’Oleron in western France are no longer in danger. However, their injuries remain “extremely serious”, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. The investigation into the attack, including the alleged perpetrator’s motives, are continuing.

An operation targeting items sold by retailer Shein which may be non-compliant with French law is underway today at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport. According to government minister Amelie de Montchalin, 200,000 packages arriving at the airport will be opened and their contents inspected by customs.

Widely used French medical booking system Doctolib has been fined for abuse of a dominant position. The penalty, amounting to just over 4.6 million euros, was imposed by the French competition regulator for allegedly abusing its dominant position in the markets for online medical appointment booking services and medical teleconsultations. The company has said that it will appeal.

Local TER train services between Nice and Marseille are being severely disrupted today due to industrial action. Union members working for train operator Transdev are seeking improved pay and better organization of their work.

The Prefect of the Var has renewed a decree prohibiting all unauthorized festive gatherings of a musical nature, such as raves, and the operation of any vehicle transporting sound equipment intended for such gatherings. The move follows a raid by authorities on a large unauthorised rave in the department last weekend.

Today is anti-bullying day in France. Between March 2022 and the end of last year, over 10,000 cases of school bullying were recorded by prosecutors, according to the government. A free, anonymous and confidential helpline for those affected by bullying is available 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., operated by the e-Enfance association. The number in France is 3018.

A man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for thefts from vehicles in the Hautes-Alpes. The 59 year old targeted cars parked outside cemeteries. 

A lucky lottery winner in the Vaucluse department has yet to come forward to claim their prize. The unknown individual bought a ticket in the “My Million” draw on 12 September. But time is running out. The prize, of one million euros, has to be claimed by this coming Monday, November 10.
