Evening Update Wednesday 5 November 2025

Five people have been injured, two of them seriously, after a man deliberately drove into pedestrians this morning in the Charente-Maritime department in southwest France. A 35 year old suspect has been detained by police after the incident on the Ile d’Oleron. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has been to the scene this afternoon and described the man’s actions as “a 35 minute rampage”. According to the local prosecutor, the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” or “God is great” in Arabic when apprehended. He also set his car on fire, according to the local mayor, who said that at least two victims had been airlifted to hospital in Poitiers with multiple injuries.

Several hundred migrants have been removed from encampments around Paris metro stations in a major operation by authorities this morning. Buses were used to transfer the individuals to temporary accommodation outside the capital. The operation reportedly proceeded peacefully.

It’s seven years today since several apartment buildings collapsed on rue d’Aubagne in Marseille. Eight people lost their lives. The collapse was followed by a review of the structural integrity of many buildings in the city. In the months following the disaster, over 500 buildings which were deemed to be unsafe were evacuated, an operation which affected several thousand people.

Three police officers have been injured after being struck by a vehicle in the Bouches-du-Rhone. The Interior Ministry said that a wanted individual refused to comply with police orders to stop. The fugitive was apprehended.

A police operation against drugs trafficking took place in the centre of Draguignan last night. 25 police officers from the National Police were involved, supported by municipal police officers. 33 people and vehicles were checked and 5 arrests were made.

Motorway operator Vinci Autoroutes has warned of heavy traffic this weekend around the 11 November holiday. Traffic is expected to be heavy around major urban areas, as well as on the main routes of the VINCI Autoroutes network, particularly on the A7, A9, A10 and A11 motorways, on Friday, in the late afternoon and Saturday around midday, as well as on Tuesday, November 11th in the evening.
