Evening Update Wednesday 3 September 2025

A teacher has suffered stab wounds after being attacked by a fellow teacher. The incident occurred this morning at a school in Martigues in the Bouches-du-Rhone. The school was evacuated and police attended the scene. The teacher reportedly suffered injuries to the neck.

The mayor of Marseille has called for additional police officers in the city after five people were attacked by a man in the city center yesterday afternoon. Benoit Payan said that there was clearly a need for more national police to make arrests and diffuse situations. He called for government authorities to bring the number of police back to the level of “15 or 20 years ago”.

The body of a hiker has been identified almost two months after his disappearance. He went missing in early July in the Hautes-Alpes. His body was found by a hiker several weeks ago and DNA analysis has now positively identified the body as being that of 69 year old Andre Chanteloup.

The Prefect of the Var has reminded residents and visitors that there is a “severe” level of fire risk today in the Corniche des Maures forest massif and access is not advised. The remaining massifs in the Var are on a “moderate” fire risk level. Further details can be found on the prefecture's website, www.var.gouv.fr

The Prefect of the Alpes Maritimes, Laurent Hottiaux, has held a meeting with Christophe Mirmand, Minister of State of the Principality of Monaco. The Prefect said that the meeting at the Palais des Rois Sardes in Nice was “an important and useful opportunity” for discussion on cross-border issues shared by the Principality and the department.

President Macron is hosting Volodymyr Zelensky for a working dinner at the Elysees this evening. The Ukrainian President is in Paris for a conference tomorrow morning which has become known as a “coalition of the willing”, which includes countries which are offering to help Ukraine with military operations. The meeting will be co-chaired by President Macron and UK Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer.

The French court of auditors has released a positive review of the works carried out to restore Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. The body, which audits the use of public funds, said the restoration is being carried out successfully at a “controlled cost”. However, it expressed concerns about the health risks of using 100 tons of lead on the cathedral's roof. The restoration of Notre Dame after the devastating fire in 2019 is ongoing, but it was reopened to the public last December.

 

BUSINESS

The US government has removed the authorization of the world's largest chip maker to freely ship advanced technology from the US to China. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company was notified by the US government that its authorization to export advanced technology to China would be revoked by the end of the year.

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced the date for the next budget. She will deliver her budget speech to the House of Commons on 26 November. In a video announcing the date, she said that Britain's economy isn't broken but that it's not “working well enough” for working people.

 

SPORT

Football… It's been confirmed that minimum salaries for players in the top two tiers of professional women's football in England are being introduced. WSL Football, which oversees England's professional leagues hasn't disclosed the salary levels yet, but described them as a "full-time wage". The salaries are being introduced for this season and it's expected that the amounts will be made public at a later date.

Rugby Union…Scottish Rugby have announced that Gregor Townsend is staying as Scotland Head Coach until the end of the next World Cup in Australia. His current contract was set to expire next April. Townsend said that the prospect of another Rugby World Cup contributed to his decision to extend his contract.
