Evening Update Wednesday 25 October 2023

It's been confirmed that next year's Tour de France will finish on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. The route of next year's race was announced earlier today and features five stages in the Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur Region. The final stage on 21 July will be between Monaco and Nice. Nice mayor Christian Estrosi said that it's the opportunity for Nice "to once again make an impression and demonstrate that our territory, between sea and mountains, constitutes a great area for cycling".

The Maritime Prefect has said that the number of rescue operations carried out over the summer declined slightly from the 2020 - 2022 period but still remained high. He said that the main causes of the high number of operations were increased attendance, inexperience, lack of preparation and irresponsible behaviour.

An operation is underway to remove two buses which were swept away by floodwaters in Saint Martin Vesubie last week. Fuel is being removed from the vehicles and a security perimeter has been established, with several residents being required to leave their homes for a few hours whilst the operation takes place.

President Macron is continuing his tour of the Middle East today with a meeting with Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. This morning he had a meeting in Jordan with King Abdullah II.

Reports in French media say that a ceremony will be held for the French victims of the Hamas attack on Israel but the location and date haven't yet been finalised. Thirty French citizens are thought to have lost their lives with nine others still missing.

Today saw the conclusion of the 33rd edition of SPORTEL Monaco, the sports content media rights and technology convention. 2000 participants from all over the world involved in the sports business industry attended the event at the Grimaldi Forum. Speakers covered topics including AI and automated production, monetization, entertainment, fan engagement, content delivery and anti-piracy.

 

BUSINESS

Boeing has announced that it expects to deliver fewer of it's 737 Max planes than originally forecast because of problems at a supplier. The company now projects that it will deliver between 375 and 400 planes this year, down from it's previous estimate of 400 to 450.

US chip maker Nvidia has been ordered by the US government to stop exports to China immediately. The government had originally given the company 30 days from 17 October to stop exports to the country. The company said that "given the strength of demand for the company’s products worldwide", it doesn't anticipate "that the accelerated timing....will have a near-term meaningful impact on its financial results".

 

SPORT

Cricket... Australia have beaten the Netherlands by 309 runs in their World Cup match. Australia went in to bat first and were 399 for 8 at the end of their innings. In reply the Netherlands were all out for just 90 runs.

Rugby Union... It's been confirmed that Tom Curry will start in England's Rugby World Cup play-off match against Argentina. Marcus Smith comes in at full-back and Henry Arundell is on the wing. Ben Youngs makes his first start of the tournament. It's been announced this afternoon that Youngs, who is England's most capped men's player, will end his international career with the match.

Meanwhile, Wales player Leigh Halfpenny has announced his retirement from international rugby. The game against the Barbarians on 4 November will be his final Test, but he'll continue to play at club level.
