Prison Conditions Criticized – The General Inspector of French Prisons has issued a report which is highly critical of the state of French prisons, including the one in Nice. Dominique Simonnot said that the facility, which was constructed in 1887, is in “an alarming condition, with damp walls, pervasive mould, and deteriorated sanitary facilities” with inmates facing dangerous electrical installations, increasing the risk of serious incidents, particularly fires.

End of Water Restrictions in Var – The Var prefecture has announced the end of water use restriction measures in the department from today. It said that given the autumn rainfall and the rise in water levels in all watercourses, drought orders will not be renewed. However, the prefecture reminded everyone to avoid wasting what it said is “a resource that remains vulnerable”.

Cold Case Appeal in Nice – The national police cold cases unit has launched a renewed appeal for witnesses in the unsolved death of a woman in Nice 24 years ago. Ariane Guillot, a 25-year-old school teacher from Paris, died on April 18, 2001 after being attacked in the Château Hill Park near the port in Nice. She suffered a single stab wound to the chest. No suspects have been identified since the incident took place.

Fire in Salon-de-Provence – A building has been badly damaged by fire in Salon-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhone department. The blaze broke out in the four storey apartment building this morning. About twenty people were evacuated but there were no reports of serious injuries.

SFR Takeover Bid Rejected – The owner of SFR has rejected a takeover bid for the mobile phone operator. Bouygues Telecom, Iliad, which is the owner of Free, and Orange had announced the submission of a non-binding offer for the acquisition of a large part of Altice group's telecommunications activities in France.

 

BUSINESS

The European Commission has fined luxury fashion houses Gucci, Chloe and Loewe more than 157 million euros for anti-competitive practices restricting independent retailers' ability to set prices for their luxury goods. The commission said the companies' fixing of resale prices breached the bloc's competition rules, and harmed consumers.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth  has called on NATO allies to increase spending on purchases of U.S. weapons for Ukraine. It follows a report highlighting a sharp decline in military support for Kyiv in July and August.

The UK chancellor is in Washington to champion Britain as a place where investors and businesses can count on economic stability. Yesterday the IMF warned UK inflation's likely to be the highest among G-7 nations - both this year and next.
