Evening Update Wednesday 12 April 2023

A complaint for manslaughter has been filed by the son of two of the people who lost their lives in the building explosion in Marseille at the weekend. Two people are still missing after the collapse of the building in rue Tivoli in the 5th arrondissement. The bodies of six people have been recovered so far.

Reports in French media say that Elisabeth Borne will meet President Macron at the end of this week to discuss the results of her consultations on pension reform. The Prime Minister has been consulting various social partners including unions as well as political organizations. The decision of the Constitutional Council is expected on Friday.

Meanwhile, another day of action by unions to protest against the reforms is scheduled to take place tomorrow. It's the 12th day of protests. As usual, public transportation will be affected. Lignes d'Azur have said that some bus lines on their network will be disrupted but tram services in Nice will still operate. The SNCF have said that 3 out of 5 local TER trains are expected to operate nationally and 4 TGV trains out of 5. One inter- city service out of five will operate and no night trains are expected to run. The SNCF said that Eurostar services will run almost as normal. Demonstrations are planned at several locations across our region including in Nice, Draguignan, Brignoles, Toulon and Marseille. Garbage collectors in Paris are set to resume their renewable strike from tomorrow. Education unions have also called for mobilization.

One person has died and one has been seriously injured after an accident in a tunnel in Ventimiglia last night. Reports say that both were riding motorcycles and the deceased man was employed as a waiter in Monaco.

President Macron's visit to the Netherlands has once again been disrupted by demonstrators. Two people chanted slogans associated with the yellow vest movement when he arrived at the University of Amsterdam earlier today. Authorities said that a man and woman have been arrested.

The website of Meteo France has been affected by an outage for much of the day today. The organization said earlier that its staff were working to get the site up and running again. It's now back on line.

 

BUSINESS

Inflation in the United States has fallen to 5%, which is slightly below forecasts and is the lowest since May 2021. Housing costs rose over the year but energy and gasoline costs fell.

Banknote maker De La Rue has said that demand for cash around the world is at its lowest level in 20 years. The company said demand for cash had fallen since the pandemic when central banks stocked up on currency. It said the downturn would hit its full year profits.

 

SPORT

Football... Nottingham Forest have sacked sporting director Filippo Giraldi after only six months. The club said the split was "amicable". He joined the club last October.

The UK and Republic of Ireland have unveiled the stadiums included in their joint bid to host Euro 2028. They include two unbuilt stadiums, Belfast's Casement Park and Everton's Bramley-Moore Dock. Others include Glasgow's Hampden Park, Cardiff's Principality Stadium, Wembley and St James' Park.

Rugby Union...Jack Willis has signed a new three-year deal with Toulouse. He joined the club last November.

 

MONTE CARLO MASTERS TENNIS REPORT

At the Monte Carlo Masters today, Kasper Ruud has beaten Botic Van der Vandschulp 7-5  7-6. Jannik Sinner beat Diego Schwartzman after he retired in the second set. Alexander Zverev beat Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4  6-4 and Jiri Lehecka beat Grigor Dimitrov  7-6  6-4.
