Evening Update Tuesday 7 September 2021

The body of a woman in her thirties has been discovered in Cannes in the early hours of this morning. Reports say that her partner, who has been taken into police custody, has stated that she had jumped from a sixth floor window during an argument. An investigation has been opened by the prosecutor in Grasse.

Two people have been arrested after a robbery at a prestigious jewellery store in Paris this lunchtime. At least three other people are believed to be at large after the incident at the Bulgari store on the Place Vendome. Reports say that police opened fire as the perpetrators fled and an officer received slight injuries.

Real estate professionals are gathering in Cannes for MIPIM World, which got underway at the Palais des Festivals today. The main theme of this year's gathering is New World, New Era - Time to Reconnect. Mayor of Cannes David Lisnard was present at the opening ceremony of the two day event this morning, as was the Minister of Housing Emmanuelle Wargon. The Cannes Yachting Festival has also opened today. The show features almost 600 boats and 430 exhibitors. It's taking place until this Sunday, 12 September.

In a good sign for local traders, there's been a new record set for vehicles parked in municipal car parks in Cannes city centre this summer. Figures were up by 17% compared to 2019. The town hall said that the renovation and decoration of car parks as well as good prices explain the sharp increase. The total amount of investment made for the eight car parks, since the takeover by municipal government in March 2019, has reached almost 2.5 million euros excluding taxes.

After the hot weather affecting much of France over the past few days, Meteo France have said that the situation will deteriorate in western and central areas from tomorrow. An active storm front is expected to sweep into the western regions of the country. The thunderstorms will be accompanied by intense rain, sometimes hail and strong squalls. An episode of very heavy precipitation is expected in the Languedoc during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. However, the storms are not expected to reach us here on the Riviera, with the weather being forecast to be quite settled on Wednesday and Thursday.

There's maintainence work being carried out at Junction 59 of the A8 motorway, that's the Menton junction, all this week. The works require the occasional closure of the entrance ramp from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at junction 59 on the carriageway towards Nice. Also, Vinci Autoroutes are carrying out maintainance work on the A8 overnght from 9pm to 6am excluding weekends, in the area from Gorbio to the Italian border, on the carriageway towards Italy. Those works will last until the beginning of October.

The Monaco town hall is involved in the Voiles Blanches Bettimask operation, the aim of which is to collect children's toys and games for the benefit of the Lenval Foundation. If you would like to contribute, two drop-off boxes are located in the Principlaity - one at the entrance to the Town Hall, the other at La Condamine Market. Everyone is welcome to drop off a game or a toy, which must be new and without gift wrapping, to be given to children in hospital.


BUSINESS

The Eurozone and wider EU economies have grown faster than previously thought after the gradual lifting of winter coronavirus measures. Seasonally adjusted GDP increased by 2.2% in the eurozone in the second quarter and by 2.1% in the EU as a whole compared with the previous quarter, according to an estimate published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. Ireland showed the highest growth at 6.3%.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a package of tax rises which are expected to raise 12 billion pounds annually to fund health services and social care. He said that the NHS has treated over half a million COVID patients and administered more than 91 million vaccines but this has caused mounting backlogs and the number of patients needing care is at a record high.

 

SPORT

Motorsports... Mercedes have signed British driver George Russell to replace Valtteri Bottas who is moving to Alfa Romeo. Russell joins from Williams. He stood in for Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton at last year's Sakhir Grand Prix after Hamilton contracted Covid-19.

Cricket.... Jos Buttler and Jack Leach are returning to the England squad for the fifth Test against India which gets underway on Friday. Buttler missed the fourth Test to be at the birth of his second child. Leach hasn't played in a Test since March.

England head coach Chris Silverwood has said that a decision over Ben Stokes' involvement in the T20 World Cup will be left as late as possible. Stokes has been taking an "indefinite break" from cricket for his mental wellbeing. England are set to name their World Cup squad on Thursday.

Rugby Union... England women's team vice-captain Emily Scarratt has had surgery on a broken leg. The 31-year-old was injured during Loughborough Lightning's match against Harlequins at the weekend.
