Evening Update Tuesday 21 October 2025

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has started a jail sentence for campaign finance conspiracy. A crowd applauded and shouted his name as he left his home in the 16th arrondissement this morning with his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. He was driven through the entrance of La Santé prison in the Montparnasse district while police cordoned off many surrounding streets. He will occupy a small cell in the jail's isolation wing. The former president has appealed against his jail sentence.

One person has been charged in connection with a major theft from the Natural History museum in Paris last month. The woman in her twenties, who was born in China, was arrested at Barcelona airport allegedly carrying about one kilo of melted gold. Six kilos of gold nuggets were stolen from the museum on the night of 15 September.

A man has died in the Bouches-du-Rhone after falling 30 metres. The man, thought to be in his forties, was at work in a limestone quarry in Chateauneuf-les-Martigues when the accident happened this morning.

A new urban security monitoring centre is set to open next year in the Alpes-Maritimes. The facility will allow smaller communities with less than 40,000 inhabitants to install public security cameras which will be monitored 24 hours a day.

Preparations are underway for one of the major winter events on the Riviera, the Menton Lemon Festival. If you’d like to be involved, the festival is currently recruiting for helpers. Interviews are taking place at the Palais de l’Europe in Menton, from 27 October to 14 November. You can get more details from the Menton Tourist Office or on social media.

The Var and Alpes-Maritimes prefectures have reminded residents that if they are going on holiday, they can sign up to Operation Tranquillite Vacances. Under the scheme, which is also available in other French departments, you can ask the police to keep an eye on your property while you’re away. More details from your local prefecture.
