Evening Update Tuesday 14 November 2023

President Macron has announced a state of natural disaster in over 200 municipalities in the Pas-de-Calais and about thirty in the Nord department which have suffered flooding. He also announced the establishment of a fund of 50 million euros to help victims in the Pas-de-Calais. The President has been visiting the department today. He also announced what he called "partial unemployment mechanisms" to help affected businesses. A separate fund will be established to help support farmers, including those in Brittany and Normandy who have suffered storm damage.

Meanwhile, the Cannes Town Hall is mobilizing to help flood victims in the Pas-de-Calais. A delegation from Cannes, made up of five agents from the Major Risks Directorate and the General Directorate of Technical Services, left this morning in a vehicle and a van, to go to a Civil Protection meeting in Berck-sur-Mer. The team is transporting flood control equipment including 5 motor pumps.

Five people have been arrested after gunshots were fired in the Moulins district of Nice, according to the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, Hughes Moutouh. He said that they were foreign drugs dealers, some of whom are minors. In a social media post, Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi thanked the National Police officers who had been involved in making the arrests.

A street in the centre of Nice was cordoned off this morning after the discovery of a suspicious package. Police and bomb disposal experts attended the scene on rue Alphonse Karr.

A police officer was hospitalised after a small fire broke out at Nice Cote d'Azur airport last night. Reports say that a person who had been detained by border police set fire to a mattress. Three people suffered from smoke inhalation, one of whom was taken to the A&E department at the Pasteur Hospital.

Three people have been arrested in Toulon by the BAC anti-crime brigade. The three were in vehicles parked close to the police station and were allegedly in the middle of a transaction involving the sale of narcotics. Police seized over 300g of cannabis and 9,300 euros in cash.

It's been announced that the 2025 edition of the Tour de France will start in the northern city of Lille. More details are expected to be revealed later this month. Next year's Tour, which is due to take place from June 29 to July 21, will start in Florence in Italy.

 

BUSINESS

Inflation in the United States has fallen. Government data released this afternoon shows that the Consumer Prices Index rose by 3.2% in October on an annual basis, down from 3.7% in September. On a monthly basis, inflation was unchanged from September to October.

The estimated number of job vacancies in the UK fell by 58,000 in the August to October quarter from the previous quarter. It was the 16th consecutive period of falling vacancies according to the Office for National Statistics. The ONS also said that annual growth in regular pay in Great Britain was 7.7% in July to September, slightly down on the previous periods, but still among the highest annual growth rates since comparable records began in 2001.

World oil demand is exceeding expectations and supply is proving resilient despite geopolitical tensions, according to the International Energy Agency. It said that "concerns over disruptions have yet to materialise" as record output from the US, Brazil and other countries continues to increase supply.

 

SPORT

Football... Jude Bellingham and Levi Colwill have withdrawn from the England squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. Five players have now pulled out of the squad. England have already qualified for the European Championships and one more win will assure them of top spot in Group C.

Meanwhile, Paul Smyth has pulled out of the squad for Northern Ireland's Euro 2024 qualifier against Finland on Friday because of injury. However, he may be available for Monday's game against Denmark.
