The nurse cited a misunderstanding of the doctor's orders, and while the hospital must pay damages to the victim's family, it has appealed the ruling.

BUSINESS
The state pension is expected to rise by £460 a year from April 2024, driven by a 4% wage increase under the "triple lock" system. This comes as the government faces backlash for cutting winter fuel payments for many pensioners. Despite the pension increase, some pensioners may still be worse off due to the loss of these payments.

The EU faces an "existential challenge" unless it increases annual investment by €800bn and reforms its industrial policy, according to a report led by Mario Draghi. The review warns that without significant spending and productivity improvements, the EU risks falling behind the US and China. It proposes controversial joint borrowing by EU states to fund these efforts, though securing political support for such measures will be difficult.

And - The UK government plans to cut winter fuel payments for over 10 million pensioners in England and Wales, limiting them to those on low incomes. Unions and MPs are pressuring the government to reconsider, warning of potential backlash and hardships for those not qualifying for benefits but still struggling. Despite internal Labour Party dissent, Keir Starmer defends the cut as necessary to address a financial shortfall left by the previous government.
