The administrative court in Marseille is today hearing an appeal seeking to stop the proposed expansion of Nice Cote d'Azur airport. Local association France Nature Environnement 06 have lodged the appeal which aims to overturn several building permits which have been granted for the extension of Terminal 2. The association is seeking to stop the building works on environmental and quality of life grounds.

A teenager is in hospital with serious injuries after a paragliding accident. The 19 year old apparently lost control of his paraglider while on a flight in the Vaucluse department. He suffered multiple injuries after falling about 30 meters to the ground.

Disruption to rail travel is expected in two weeks time. Several unions representing rail workers have called for industrial action on Thursday September 18. A third rail union has instead called for industrial action on 10 September, the day on which the so-called Block Everything movement is calling for general protests against the government.

A thirteen year old has been charged with the alleged fatal stabbing of a sixteen year old. The two had apparently been engaged in an altercation near Lyon on Sunday evening. The accused teenager has been placed in pre-trial detention.

HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco has written to the President of Portugal after the funicular accident in Lisbon yesterday in which sixteen people lost their lives. In the letter to Mr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Prince said that he and Princess Charlene had learned of the accident with deep emotion and that he and his family joined the people of Monaco in expressing their great sorrow following the tragedy. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.

 

BUSINESS

President Trump has lodged an appeal with the US Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn a ruling by a lower court that said many tariffs imposed by the President were illegal. Last week the lower court ruled that the tariffs Trump brought in through the exercise of emergency powers did not fall within the president's mandate and that setting levies was "a core Congressional power".

The world's largest sports piracy site has been closed down by police. Anti-piracy group The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment said it had teamed up with police in Egypt to close Streameast, which allowed access to pirated streams of major sports such as Premier League football, Formula One and Major League Baseball.

 

SPORT

Rugby Union…. Alex Matthews will captain the England women's team in their match against Australia on Saturday. Regular captain Zoe Aldcroft is out because of a knee injury.

Motorsports… US Indycar driver Colton Herta has joined the new Cadillac Formula 1 team as a test driver for 2026. Cadillac have already signed Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez as race drivers for their first Formula 1 season.

Cricket…England are playing South Africa at Lords in the second of three ODI's. England won a delayed toss and bowled first. Saqib Mahmood replaces Sonny Baker who made his Test debut in the first ODI. After their 50 overs early this evening, South Africa were 330 for 8.
