Evening Update Thursday 3 November 2022

Meteo France have a yellow weather warning for storms and heavy rain and flooding in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes. The warning is in force until 8pm this evening in the Alpes-Maritimes and until 2am tomorrow morning in the Var. Parks, public gardens and cemeteries in Nice have been closed this afternoon because of the bad weather and the Nice Town Hall vigilance cell has been activated.

Trains have returned to normal between Nice and Ventimiglia after the landslide at Eze during Wednesday's storm. Early this afternoon SNCF said that work to restore power and remove debris from the track had been completed.

A teenager has died after falling from a building in Cannes this morning. Reports say that the 14 year old girl fell from the ninth floor of the building where she lived on the boulevard Riou in the north-east part of the town. Inquiries are continuing into the circumstances of the tragedy.

The French National Academy of Medicine has called for the increased use of masks to protect against Covid-19 and influenza, including on public transport. Although it said that the health situation does not currently require a return to mandatory measures, the National Academy of Medicine recommends the wearing of an FFP2 type mask in enclosed public spaces for the elderly or those with co-morbidities, for their entourage and health professionals who are in contact with vulnerable people, and also for pregnant women, even when they are up to date with their vaccinations. The organization also recommends the wearing of a surgical-type mask in hospitals, dispensaries, health centres and pharmacies, and in closed spaces open to the public, such as public transport during busy periods. It also recommends the systematic use of hydro-alcoholic gel in places open to the public.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Bourne has announced a fund of 60 million euros for food. She said that the aid will be distributed to national organizations which offer food aid programmes and also to various local projects.

President of the Nice Cote d'Azur Metropolis Christian Estrosi has been in Beaulieu-sur-Mer to launch the port's renovation project. The renovation of the port will take place in 3 phases from now until 2024.

The municipality of Antibes Juan-les-Pins has released an update on covid numbers at the Antibes hospital. In the period from October 23 to 31, 375 PCR tests were carried out. 62 cases were declared positive and there were 4 hospitalized patients, including 2 in intensive care but no deaths.

President of the PACA Region, Renaud Muselier was present at the opening of a new bus depot for the Envibus network in Antibes. Mayor of Antibes Jean Leonetti, who was also present at the ceremony, said that the building "symbolizes our ambitions in terms of mobility and sustainable development".

 

BUSINESS

The Bank of England has raised UK interest rates to 3% from 2.25%, taking them to their highest level since 2008. The Bank warned that the UK is facing its longest recession since records began. In its outlook for the economy, it said that the UK would face a "very challenging" two-year period and unemployment will nearly double.

Supermarket operator Sainsbury’s has reported a fall in profits of 8% for the first half of the year, which was better than expected. Chief Executive Simon Roberts said that the company understands "how tough it is for millions of households right now" and that it will have invested more than £500 million by March 2023 in keeping prices lower.

 

SPORT

Tennis...Gilles Simon has ended his career after being eliminated from the Paris Masters this afternoon. The French player, from Nice, had said that he would retire at the end of the tournament. He was beaten by Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Cricket... Pakistan have beaten South Africa by 33 runs in the Men's T20 World Cup. The result means that Pakistan can still qualify for the semi-finals but need to beat Bangladesh on Sunday and hope that South Africa fail to beat the Netherlands or India lose to Zimbabwe.

Rugby Union... Rio Dyer will make his debut for Wales in Saturday's Autumn Nations game against New Zealand at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. Leigh Halfpenny returns at full-back after more than a year out injured.

Rugby League... England captain Sam Tomkins has returned to the matchday squad for the quarter-final against Papua New Guinea on Saturday. Kallum Watkins, Herbie Farnworth, Michael McIlorum and Elliott Whitehead also return to the squad.

Football... A Women's Nations League will take place for the first time next year. Uefa announced the new competition will begin in the autumn of 2023 in the lead up to the Women's European Championship in 2025.
