Evening Update Thursday 29 August

The police are looking for a man who sprayed a bus driver in Nice this morning. A motorist apparently got out of his car and attacked the bus driver after a dispute over who had priority. The incident happened at 9.50 this morning at the Villermont Avenue junction and Raiberti Street, in the Liberation District.

Two divers are recovering in a decompression chamber after a diving accident in the marina at Cavalaire this morning. The man and woman in their forties were taken by helicopter to a specialized hospital facility in the Toulon area. Meanwhile, an 80 year old man has been rescued from the sea at Sainte-Maxime this morning. He became a member of the local fire department.

A fire in undergrowth in Puget-sur-Argens was quickly extinguished this afternoon. The blaze, on the Chemin des Wagonnets, affected about one thousand square metres and was brought under control by 23 firefighters and equipment including a water bombing helicopter. Police are carrying out an investigation into the circumstances of the fire.

Shots were fired by police officers in Theoule-sur-Mer during a car chase in the early hours of this morning. A vehicle being driven by two men refused to stop at a roadside check by BAC anti-crime officers. The officers pursued the vehicle, which was eventually brought to a halt, but the two men escaped and are still being sought. 

 

It's expected to be a very busy few days back to the weekend to get back to their homes. Friday is classified as a "Red" day in the south of France in the direction of returns. It's expected to be very heavy during the day and early evening on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when motorways join urban areas.

A 26 year old man has been detained in St Raphael with a snake in his backpack. The man, who was wanted for questioning by authorities, was stopped by police on the railway line near St Raphael station. The snake, which was in a water bottle, was released in the wild and was held in police custody.

Sebastien Lecornu , the French minister for local authorities, has said that There are 35,000 mayors in France. The Minister said that they suffered 361 acts of aggression last year, of which 60 per cent were insults or threats, or verbal or posted on social networks.

The French Secretary of State for the Interior , Laurent Nuñez, has said that the police complaints body, the IGPN, has 313 investigations underway for complaints against the police related to the Yellow Vest protests. He said that "a little more than half" had been sent to the public prosecutor's office for appraisal.

 

BUSINESS

Micro Focus , the largest UK-based tech firm, said it will be worse than expected. The company warned in March that it would be 4% to 6% lower for the year to 31 October. It will now be called "deteriorating macro-environment".

UK football pitch rental firm, Goals Soccer, which is owned by the retail tycoon Mike Ashley, has put itself up for sale. The company said it has started inviting the business and its assets. It is currently investigating allegations over financial irregularities

Vodafone Group will be the official partner of Porsche Motorsport in the upcoming 2019/2020 ABB FIA Formula E Championship. The new five-year sponsorship deal includes the provision of communications equipment and technical support.

 

SPORT

Motorsports ... Formula 1 will have a record 22 races in the 2020 season. There are two new breeds in the Netherlands and Vietnam but no breed in Germany. The season begins in Australia on 15 March and ends in Abu Dhabi on 29 November next year.

Meanwhile, it's been announced that Valtteri Bottas will remain at Mercedes for the 2020 season. Mercedes has exercised an option to extend his contract.

Rugby Union ... Wales have made 14 changes for the match against Ireland on Saturday. Josh Navidi captains Wales for the first time while Jarrod Evans starts at fly-half.

Soccer. ..Manchester United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Aston Villa center-back Tyrone Mings have won their first call-ups to the England senior squad, as the England team line-up was announced this afternoon. English teams are awaiting the Champions League draw, which takes place at 6pm our time.
