Evening Update Thursday 24 April 2025

A student at a school in Brittany has died after being stabbed by another student this afternoon. Three other pupils were also injured in the incident, one of them seriously. They were attacked by a 15 year old student at the school in Nantes. French National Education Minister Elisabeth Borne and Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau arrived at the scene of the attack this afternoon.

Twenty one people have been arrested in a major anti-drugs operation centered on Marseille this morning. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said that the arrests, which he called “at the high end of the spectrum” should allow the “dismantling of a major network in Marseille”. The Minister was visiting Marseille today and said at a press conference this morning that the arrests had not been confined to the city as the network had “national ramifications”.

A major search is underway in the Mediterranean for a missing French Navy sailor. According to Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu, the sailor is serving aboard a carrier strike group ship returning from a mission and has been missing since last night. The Ministry said that the ship was sailing about 150 nautical miles south of Toulon and was returning to its base in the city. The search, which is being conducted by CROSSMED under the authority of the Maritime Prefect of the Mediterranean, has involved the use of surveillance aircraft.

Negotiations are continuing between rail unions and SNCF management to try to avert a strike called by several unions spanning 5 May to 11 May and including the May 8 holiday weekend. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said today that he hopes unions will "come to their senses".

Two runaway children have been found safe and well in Arles. The two twelve year olds from the same family in the Gard department were reported missing by a family member yesterday evening. The two were quickly located by security cameras in Arles later in the evening and have now been returned to their parents.

The French government office against illegal migrants, together with CRS officers, have conducted a coordinated vehicle check at the Bandol toll booths in the Var. Violations were found of immigration laws, employment of undocumented foreigners, facilitation of illegal residence, and lack of permits.

 

BUSINESS

A senior manager of vehicle producer Nissan has said that the UK is "not a competitive place to be building cars". Alan Johnson, who is senior vice president for manufacturing for Nissan's Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania operations, urged the government to support the automotive sector. He told MPs that its Sunderland factory "pays more for its electricity than any other Nissan plant in the world".

Consumer expectations for the UK economy have fallen to a record low according to research by the British Retail Consortium. Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the BRS said: “Even with a pause on many of the US tariffs, business and consumer confidence remains fragile" and that £7bn in new costs are hitting UK retailers this year from higher employer National Insurance.

Tesla's share of the car market in Europe fell year on year according to new figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturer's Association. It said that the electric car manufacturer's share of cars sold in the UK, EU and European Free Trade Area had fallen from 2.9% in March 2024 to 2% last month.

 

SPORT

Football... Jamie Vardy is leaving Leicester at the end of the season but intends to continue his playing career. The club described Vardy as "our greatest ever player". The 38-year-old joined Leicester in 2012 from non-league side Fleetwood Town. He's the club's record Premier League scorer with 143 goals.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has returned to work following a stay in hospital with pneumonia. The club have thanked supporters on social media for their “warm wishes”. Newcastle are currently fifth in the Premier League and are set to play Ipswich at St James's Park on Saturday.

Rugby Union... Northampton player Henry Pollock has been nominated for the Champions Cup Player of the Year. He scored six tries in six games during the club's run to a second consecutive semi-final. Other players nominated include Jordie Barrett, Jack Willis, Caelan Doris, Jamison Gibson-Park, Thomas Ramos, Maxime Lucu and Damian Penaud.
