The Simone-Veil hospital in Cannes has said that a large amount of data has been made public on the internet following a cyber attack last month. The hospital said today that 61 gigabytes of data had been released by hackers after the hospital refused to pay a ransom. It added that it was prohibited from paying the ransom by law. The data published reportedly includes a wide range of documents including medical assessments and bank details.

A woman has died after being hit by a train near Biot station this morning. Inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Several boats have been destroyed in the port of Saint-Laurent-du-Var after a fire broke out last night. No injuries were reported and investigations are continuing to establish the cause of the blaze.

A tourist from the UK has been treated in hospital after being attacked on the Promenade des Anglais. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said that a police officer and emergency services intervened to come to the aid of an English tourist injured in the thigh by a drunk individual. The mayor expressed his support to the victim, who was treated at the Nice University Hospital.

A new SOS Medecins facility has been inaugurated in Nice. The building includes four consultation rooms, including one dedicated to carrying out technical procedures, such as dressings. The French Interior Ministry has said that a record number of migrants crossed the Channel from France to the UK yesterday. According to the ministry, 711 migrants arrived in the UK and a further 66 were rescued by authorities off the coast of France.

As the start of the Paris Olympics gets nearer, the Olympic flame will be crossing eight communes in the Var next Friday, 10 May. The flame will arrive in Marseille from Greece on 8 May to begin its journey across France. You can find the route through the Var and traffic restrictions being put in place on the prefecture’s website www.var.gouv.fr The flame is scheduled to arrive in Nice on 18 June.

 

BUSINESS

 

The OECD, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, has forecast growth for the UK of just 0.4% this year, down from its previous forecast of 0.7%. For next year, UK growth is forecast to be 1%, which is the lowest growth in the G7 group of nations. The OECD said that the UK’s lacklustre performance was partly due to interest rate increases and added that some inflationary pressures still remain high.

Uber is facing a legal case in the High Court in London brought by black-cab taxi drivers.  They allege that Uber deliberately misled Transport for London to get its licence to operate in the city. A spokesperson for Uber has said that the claims are “completely unfounded”.

 

SPORT

Rugby…It’s been announced that the England’s women’s team will play New Zealand at Twickenham on 14 September. The team will also play France seven days earlier in Gloucester.

Meanwhile, it’s also been announced that Ireland will face Australia in a one-off Test match on 14 September. The teams are playing in Belfast as part of Irish Rugby's 150th anniversary celebrations.

Motorsports… French engineer David Sanchez has joined Alpine as executive technical director. He most recently spent a few months at McLaren and prior to that was with Ferrari.

Football… Ralf Rangnick has confirmed he will stay on as manager of the Austrian national team. The former Manchester United manager had been in talks with Bayern Munich.
