Evening Update Thursday 12 January

The Paris prosecutor's office has said that the man suspected of stabbing six people at the Gare du Nord yesterday has been placed in police custody. It said that the process to confirm the man's identity is still in progress as he is recorded under three different identities in fingerprint files. The suspect is still in hospital suffering from serious injuries after having being shot by police.

A hunter who fired the shot which killed a man in the Lot department two years ago has been given a two year suspended prison sentence. The court in Cahors in the Occitanie region also imposed a life ban on hunting on the 35 year old. 25 year old Morgan Keane, who resided locally but was of British origin, was chopping wood near his family's property when he was shot in December 2020.

One man has died and another has been injured after shots were fired in a suburb of Lyon last night. The local prosecutor said that an investigation has been opened in order to try to identify the individual or individuals responsible.

The municipality of Antibes Juan-les-Pins has reminded locals that the census campaign will take place from January 19 until February 25. In all municipalities with 10,000 inhabitants or more, including Antibes Juan-les-Pins, data collection takes place each year with a sample of 8% of dwellings spread over the municipal territory. If your accommodation is part of the sample identified in 2023, you will have been informed in advance by a letter from the Mayor. The municipality has reminded local residents that the census is free of charge and not to respond to sites that ask for money.

Cannes is set to host the 2nd edition of the "World AI Cannes Festival", the international exhibition dedicated to artificial intelligence. 10,000 people attended the first edition last year. It's at the Palais des Festivals and is open to business visitors on the 9 and 10 February and to the general public on February 11. International professionals in the sector, start-ups and researchers will present the major innovations of AI and make visitors aware of the economic, human and ethical challenges of the technology.

 

BUSINESS

Inflation in the United States fell in December according to US government figures published this afternoon. Annual inflation in December was 6.5%, down from 7.1% in November.

Retailer Marks and Spencer has said that food sales increased 10.2% and reached their highest ever recorded market share in the 13 weeks to the end of December. Clothing & Home sales increased 8.8% and achieved their highest market share since 2015. It said that international sales increased by 12.5% with strong retail sales growth in key franchise markets in the Middle East and owned markets including India.

Meanwhile, supermarket chain Tesco said that it had enjoyed its best ever day of sales on 23 December. Sales in the UK rose by 7.2% in the six weeks to 7 January.

British Gas owner Centrica has issued new guidance for its 2022 earnings which are set to be announced next month as part of its full year results. The company said that it expects adjusted earnings to be over 30 pence per share which is almost eight times their level in 2021.

Football..Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Netherlands striker Wout Weg-horst on loan for the rest of the season. He has spent the first half of the season at Turkish club Besik-tas. He's scheduled to have a medical at Manchester United before completion of the move.
