Evening Update Monday 8th of July 2024

NEWS
No Majority - With no party securing a majority in the parliamentary elections, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal was expected to resign. However, President Emmanuel Macron has requested Attal to remain in office to maintain stability in the country. Macron is awaiting the formation of the new assembly and the announcement of the New Front Populaire's (NFP) candidate for Prime Minister, expected within the week. The NFP will hold 178 seats, the presidential party Ensemble will have 150, and the RN will have 143 seats in the National Assembly.

3rd Consituency in the Alpes-Maritimes - Defying expectations in the 3rd constituency, Bernard Chaix, an ally of Eric Ciotti, was elected under the right-wing LR and RN parties in the Alpes Maritimes. Chaix won 53.7% of the vote against left-wing candidate Laure Quignard. Known in Nice for his textile chain, Chaix Décoration, which boasts 1 million euros in sales, Chaix began his political career in 2020 alongside Christian Estrosi. After his first term as a local councillor, he became close to Eric Ciotti and joined the municipal opposition in Nice and will now join the National Assembly.

Bac Results - The Baccalaureate exam results are now available at several high schools and on various academic websites. The exams began on June 11 for Bac Pro and June 18 for Bac Général and Techno. Results for students registered with the Academy of Nice have been released on Monday at 2:30 PM.

Handiplage in Monaco - The Handiplage site in Monaco has undergone several improvements. Until September 1st, people with reduced mobility can benefit from a tiralo, a special chair that helps them enter the water, along with assistance from a dedicated team. The Handiplage team has expanded from four to six members, and the team's active hours have been extended to 10 AM to 6 PM on weekdays and 9 AM to 7 PM on weekends. Additionally, parking at Larvotto is free for the first three hours for individuals with special needs.

Armed Individuals in Nice - Armed individuals have been arrested on Monday morning in Nice Est, near Roquebillère. Similar to an incident last week, a group of masked individuals armed with a shotgun was reported to the police and tracked via CCTV. Upon arrival, police arrested eight individuals aged 16 to 24 and seized a bag containing a Kalashnikov and a shotgun. Last week, a similar event led to an investigation for attempted murder by an organized group.

Drugs and Weapons Seized in the Var - Drugs and weapons have been seized from two vehicles and a boat in the Var department. On June 25, five individuals aged 24 to 34 were arrested for transporting approximately 380 kg of cocaine and cannabis, along with seven category A and B firearms, intended for the Var and Maralpine markets from Spain. Two of the suspects have been placed under judicial supervision, while the other three have been remanded in custody.

BUSINESS
Paramount Global, one of Hollywood's oldest companies, is merging with Skydance Media. Shari Redstone, Paramount’s non-executive chair, will sell her family's controlling stake in a deal valuing the new firm at around $28bn (£21.9bn). This ends the Redstone family's long control of Paramount, a media empire including CBS, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and MTV. Skydance will invest $8bn in Paramount, including $2.4bn for National Amusements, which holds significant voting rights. The merger, expected to close by next summer, aims to boost Paramount's success amid the video-streaming revolution.

And - Boeing has pleaded guilty to a criminal fraud conspiracy charge after the US found it violated a reform deal following two fatal crashes that killed 346 people. The company will pay a $243.6m fine, but victims' families criticize this as a "sweetheart deal" that avoids full accountability. This plea avoids a trial and is pending a judge's approval. Despite a 2021 agreement to avoid prosecution by paying penalties and improving safety, a recent incident prompted the DOJ to find Boeing in violation of the deal. This guilty plea marks Boeing with a criminal record, potentially impacting its contracts. Critics argue the deal hides the true consequences of Boeing's actions, urging for a public trial.

Tennis - Britain's Emma Raducanu says an encouraging Wimbledon run has "fuelled the fire" to continue her upward trajectory over the rest of the season. Raducanu, 21, was beaten 6-2 5-7 6-2 by New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun in the fourth round on Sunday.

Football - Bayern Munich have signed winger Michael Olise from Crystal Palace for about 60m euros (£50m). The 22-year-old English-born France Under-21 forward made 90 appearances in all competitions over three seasons with Palace.

Rugby Union - France have suspended full-back Melvyn Jaminet after he posted a video on social media with a racist comment. Jaminet, who plays for Toulon, came off the bench in his national team's win away to Argentina on Saturday.

Golf - Ewen Ferguson won the BMW International Open in Munich, Germany, by two strokes and secured a place at this month's Open Championship at Royal Troon.
