Scam in Cannes - The Cannes City Hall warns local merchants about a scam involving fake municipal police officers demanding money for ads in a specialized magazine. These individuals are not affiliated with the City Hall. Merchants are urged to report such incidents to the municipal police. The City Hall has filed a complaint for fraud.

Road Fatalities - Road fatalities in Alpes-Maritimes have increased by 46% compared to last year, with 32 deaths from January 1 to July 28, 2024. Of these, 56% involved motorbike users, mostly men aged 25-64. Other statistics show: 428 accidents (+21%), 513 injuries (+33%), 172 serious injuries (+12%). Key factors of those accidents include speeding (48%), alcohol (24%), inattention (21%), and drug use (21%).

Natural Disasters in the Var - Five communes have been declared in a state of natural disaster in the Var. Two are due to floods and mudslides (Le Luc-en-Provence and La Verdière), and three due to soil movements from drought and rehydration (La Cadière-d'Azur, Callas, and La Motte). Residents have 30 days to report damages to their insurance.

Yellow Heatwave Alert Continues - Meteo France continues to forecast a yellow heatwave alert for the Riviera. Daytime temperatures stick in the low 30s, while night-time temperatures refuse to dip below 26 degrees. it’s hoped the weather will return to more normal summer conditions by Wednesday.

Sea Temperature Record - Sea temperatures in the Mediterranean have reached record highs since last year, hitting 30 degrees Celsius off the coast of Nice. The heatwave persists in the Alpes-Maritimes, with temperatures expected to exceed 32 degrees Celsius today.

Renting Private Pools - Renting private pools has become popular due to the heat in Vaucluse. Homeowners earn extra income, and renters enjoy private swims for a few hours. Platforms like Swimmy connect renters and pool owners, with prices averaging 10 to 30 euros per person. The company takes a 31% commission on each transaction.

New Eco-Friendly Device in Saint-Tropez - A new eco-friendly floating dock prototype, named Meltem, is being tested at the port of Saint-Tropez. Designed by the startup One Concept Marine, the dock generates electricity with solar panels and collects rainwater. The structure, which costs €500,000 in R&D, aims to promote ecological transition in ports. It can produce 15kW/h daily, enough to cover the needs of an average household, and potentially meet the demands of entire ports. The materials are sourced locally to minimize the carbon footprint. The dock is expected to last 25 years, with plans for refurbishing and resale.

The US government has sued TikTok, accusing it of unlawfully collecting children's data and ignoring parents' requests to delete accounts. The DOJ claims this violates child privacy laws requiring parental consent for those under 13. The lawsuit highlights repeated offenses by TikTok and ByteDance, seeking to stop these practices and impose penalties. TikTok, with over 1 billion users globally, is under increasing pressure, including potential US bans. The company has faced similar fines in the UK and Europe.

And - Cities worldwide are boosting their night-time economies, with around 100 having "night mayors." Montreal plans to join Berlin and Tokyo in offering 24-hour nightlife to increase revenue and cultural activities. Proponents argue staggered closing times will improve safety and reduce violence, while critics worry about infrastructure and affordability. Montreal aims to launch its 24-hour nightlife district in the fall, hoping to enhance both its economy and cultural identity.

Tennis - Novak Djokovic beat Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2) in thrilling fashion to secure a long-awaited Olympic title and complete the career 'Golden Slam'.

Football - Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has agreed to join Atletico Madrid. The Blues had accepted a £33m offer from the Spanish side last week.
