A man in his twenties has died after being stabbed in Toulon this afternoon. The incident happened in the Cours Lafayette in the centre of the city. A man was arrested shortly afterwards.

The French government has said that the summer of this year has been the fourth hottest since 1900. Minister of Ecological Transition Christophe Bechu said that the average temperature in France over the past three months has been 1.4 degrees above that normally experienced at that time of year. 2003 was the hottest recorded summer so far in France, followed by 2022. This summer almost reached temperatures experienced in the summer of 2018.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and Education minister Gabrial Attal have been visiting two schools in the Ille-et-Vallaine department on the first day of the new school year. They are discussing the working conditions of teachers as well as improvements in basic educational subjects. Several dozen demonstrators gathered nearby, banging pots and pans.

A complaint is being filed by football club Olympique de Marseille after a family of OM supporters was attacked by ultras from Nantes. The two sides were playing each other in Marseille on Friday evening. The father of the family suffered two heart attacks and was hospitalised. Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra called the violence "outrageous" and said that "nothing justifies a child, his parents or anyone else being subjected to such hatred in a stadium".

A man has died after falling about fifty metres on Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse department at the weekend. The man, who was in his forties, was part of a group of hikers.

Over 100,000 homes in the Vendee in western France were without power yesterday evening. Access to mobile telephone services was also disrupted. The outage, which was caused by a problem in the supply network, ended later the evening and power was restored.

France's wealthiest businessman is making a donation to the restos du coeur. Bernard Arnault and his family announced that they would make a donation of 10 million euros to the organization. M. Arnault's eldest son Antoine will visit the charity's premises tomorrow along with Minister of Solidarity and Families Aurore Berge.

 

BUSINESS

Ryanair carried 18.9 million passengers in the month of August, which is up 11% on the same month last year. It said that it operated 103,000 flights in the month. 350 of its flights were cancelled because of the recent UK air traffic control failure which Ryanair said "has still not been explained".

Chinese property developer Country Garden has reportedly secured an extension to a key debt payment deadline. Many major home builders saw their shares rise in Hong Kong on Monday. Investors also welcomed moves by the Chinese government to increase its support for the economy.

 

SPORT

Football... Tom Lockyer is out of the Wales squad because of injury. The Luton Town captain has withdrawn from the squad for their games against South Korea and Latvia. Dan James has also been ruled out because of injury.

Golf...Ludvig Aberg will make his Ryder Cup debut for Europe after being picked as a wildcard. The 23-year-old only turned professional in June. He won the European Masters in Switzerland yesterday.
