Evening Update Monday 30 December

Investigations are continuing into the death of a 20 year old man in central Nice over the weekend. The man was found lying in the road on rue Valperga yesterday morning. It's believed that he had fallen from the 4th floor of a nearby apartment.

Police are reviewing video camera footage to try to establish the cause of a fatal accident in Sanary in the Var over the weekend. The driver of a 4x4 collided with several pedestrians near the Esplanade parking, killing a man from Six-Fours and seriously injuring his son, as well as injuring two other people.

Almost one hundred skiiers had to be taken down from a broken ski lift yesterday afternoon.  The lift, at Serre Chevalier in the Hautes-Alpes, suffered a mechanical failure at about 3pm. The 97 skiers on the lift were rescued by air and ground forces and all were safely on the ground a couple of hours later.

An elderly couple are in hospital after apparently attempting to take their own lives. Police attended premises in Mouans-Sartoux on Saturday night where they discovered the couple had tried to hang themselves. They were both taken to the Pasteur Hospital in Nice.

Police have asked for the public's assistance in locating a man missing from Cannes. Patrice Cottais, who is  49-year-old, was last seen on boulevard Carnot on Christmas Day. He may be driving a dark blue VW Golf. He is described as being 1.80 m tall and of normal build with short brown hair. He has a handicap in his right hand. Anyone with information is asked to call 04. 93.06.21.43

A police officer has taken his own life in Nanterre near Paris. The officer shot himself with his police gun at the police headquarters in the early hours of Sunday morning. His death brings the number of police officers who have committed suicide in France to 59 since the start of the year.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner has said that almost 100,000 police officers will be on duty on New Years Eve. Soldiers and firefighters will also be mobilised. The authorities will be carrying out controls on the roads. Monsieur Castaner said that there is no particular terrorist threat at the moment, but there is still a high level of permanent risk.

 

BUSINESS

Cabin crew at Lufthansa's low-cost airline Germanwings are staging a three-day strike over the New Year period, resulting in the cancellation of about 180 flights. The walkout began at midnight last night and will last until midnight on the 1st of January. Talks over the weekend broke down, with the union rejecting management concessions as insufficient.

 

SPORT

Cricket....  Dom Sibley has become the 11th England player to be affected by illness on the tour of South Africa. The second match of the four-Test series starts on Friday in Cape Town. Sibley, who is playing in only his third Test, made four and 29 in the first match.

Football… The new West Ham manager David Moyes has held a media conference today and said that winning is "what he does". He added that the club's owners had showed "a lot of class" in bringing him back for a second spell in charge. Moyes, who replaces Manuel Pellegrini, last managed West Ham for seven months in late 2017 and early 2018.

Athletics... India will compete at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games after fears its athletes could boycott the event when shooting was omitted from the schedule. The announcement comes after Commonwealth Games Federation officials held talks with Indian representatives in New Delhi. India was unhappy after shooting, a sport it traditionally performs well in, was dropped as a medal event.
