Evening Update Monday 29 May 2023

A light plane has crashed on takeoff at Saint-Tropez-La Mole airport this morning. Local reports say that two men were on board the plane, which was heading for Limoges. Both escaped without injures.

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after being shot in Marseille last night. Reports say that the man in his thirties was enticed out of his home in the 14th arrondissement by a fake pizza delivery man before being surrounded by four individuals who then opened fire. Investigations are continuing.

A woman in her twenties is in a serious condition in hospital after crashing her car into the Paillon river at the weekend. Her car left the road on a bridge crossing the river at La Trinite.

Negotiations have got underway in Paris today aimed at banning the production of plastics worldwide. Representatives from 175 states are gathered in Paris for five days of negotiations as part of an initiative of the United Nations. Five such meetings ae planned at various locations worldwide, the one in Paris being the second. The aim is to have a treaty in place by the end of 2024. Addressing the meeting this morning, President Macron called plastic pollution "a time bomb as well as a scourge already present".

 

BUSINESS


President Biden has said a bi-partisan deal to raise the US debt ceiling is ready to move to Congress for its approval. The proposed deal is the result of protracted negotiations between Democrats and Republicans. The US Treasury had warned the the country will run out of money on 5 June without a deal. The House and the Senate are currently on the Memorial Day break but will return tomorrow. It's expected that the House will vote on the proposals on Wednesday before sending them to the Senate.

Confectionary maker Mars is trialling a new more envirnomentally friendly packaging for it Mars bars. Recyclable paper wrappers instead of plastic will be rolled out at 500 Tesco stores in the UK from today. Mars say it's a challenge to find the right paper packaging solution with an "adequate level of barrier properties to protect the chocolate".

Tennis... The French Open is underway at Roland Garros. Madison Keys defeated Kaia Kanepi. Bernarda Pera beat Anett Kontaveit. In the Men's singles, Britain's Cameron Norrie beat French player Bruno Paire in five sets, Diego Schwartzman beat Spain's Bernabé Zapata Miralles and Roberto Bautista Agut defeated Wu Yibing.

Football... England player Jude Bellingham has been named as Bundesliga player of the season. The 19 year old plays for Borussia Dortmund at club level.
