Evening Update Monday 26 August 2024

Inquiries are continuing after one person died in a shooting in the Herault department early this morning. Shots were fired from a car towards another car in La Grande-Motte. The passenger in the second car was shot in the chest and died from his injuries. The driver of that vehicle was also injured and is in a serious condition in hospital. Local reports say that a rapper who had been performing at a nearby nightclub may have been the intended target of the attack.

An investigation has been opened after a man died in police custody in Nice over the weekend. He had been detained in the cells at the Auvare barracks on Saturday night.

Teachers in French nursery and primary schools are calling for a day of industrial action on Tuesday 10 September. Unions said that the strike will take place during the administration of national assesments. They are protesting at the generalisation and mandatory nature of the assesments in elementary schools, saying that they are a source of stress for teachers, pupils and parents.

President Macron has continued to receive a wide range of political leaders at the Elysees today as part of his attempt to form a new government. He received Marine LePen and Jordan Bardella from the National Rally as well as Eric Ciotti from the Republican party. The heads of the National Assembly and the Senate are also meeting with President Macron today.

The French air accident investigation department is appealing for witnesses to a plane crash in Le Lavandou on 16 August. The plane crashed during a commemoration of the Provence landings. The pilot died in the accident. The BEA is now appealing for witnesses to try to establish the entire trajectory of the plane during its demonstration between 4:50 pm and 5 pm on that day. Anyone with videos or photos is asked to contact the BEA.

Nice mayor Christian Estrosi has hailed the Grand Arrival of the Tour de France as a “huge success”. He said that there had been €60 million in economic benefits, 98% hotel occupancy and 300 million television viewers in 190 countries. He said that the city's strategy of hosting major events "is bearing fruit". The mayor added that the summer 2024 season had been "exceptional" and that Nice had confirmed its position as "France's leading destination after Paris".

The city of Marseille is making final preparations for two days of festivities to mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation during the Second World War. A wide range of concerts, parades and exhibitions are planned for tomorrow and Wednesday. Road diversions and parking restrictions are in place.

 

BUSINESS

Uber has received a fine of 290 million euros for transferring the personal data of European drivers to servers in the United States. The Dutch Data Protection Authority said the transfers were a "serious violation" of the EU's GDPR regulations. It said that information including ID documents, taxi licenses and location data was transferred to the company's headquarters in the US over a two-year period. Uber said it would appeal against the fine, which it called "unjustified".

Australian airline Quantas has mistakenly sold several hundred flights at reduced prices. The airline reportedly listed first class flights between Australia and the US at discounts of about 85%. Quantas has offered those who booked the flights new bookings in business class "at no extra cost" or a refund "as a gesture of goodwill".

Furniture retailer IKEA is testing a platform for customers to sell second-hand goods. IKEA Preowned is currently inviting users in Madrid and Oslo to sign up for the service which allows customers to sell items or buy second-hand items. 

 

SPORT

Football... Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has died at the age of 76. He led England to the quarter-finals at three major tournaments during his five-year tenure in charge of the national team between 2001 and 2006.

Transfer spending by Premier League clubs is about £800m down last summer as the transfer window enters its final week. According to data from Football Transfers quoted by the BBC, clubs spent £2.3bn on new signings last summer but have paid out £1.5bn so far in the current window. The gap is expected to close though as more deals are done this week.

Cricket... England have picked five uncapped players for next month's white-ball series against Australia. Warwickshire's Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley have been picked as have Essex player Jordan Cox, Hampshire's  John Turner and Leicestershire bowler Josh Hull. Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali are not included in the side.
