Evening Update Monday 15 August 2022

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi has said that he is "very saddened" by the tragic death of a 29-year-old nurse from Nice, in the Mont-Blanc massif. He said that his thoughts go out to her family, loved ones and colleagues. The bodies of the climber and her guide were found last Friday near Chamonix.

Firefighters have extinguished a fire in Antibes this morning. The blaze on the roof of a building in the centre of the city produced black smoke which could be seen across a wide area.

Meanwhile, firefighters in St Laurent du Var extinguished a serious fire in the early hours of this morning. Residents of a building on Avenue Verdun were evacuated and two were reportedly taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A ceremony took place today in memory of members of the French Resistance who were executed in the Second World War. The 21 Resistance fighters were shot by German forces on August 15th 1944 in the L'Ariane district of Nice.

A fire which destroyed 130 hectares in the Isere has now been extinguished. About a hundred people had been evacuated from buildings in the area. Local firefighters said that the fire was extinguished "after ten days of struggle". Meanwhile, a fire which started in the Pyrenees-Orientales last night had consumed about 110 hectares earlier today. About 400 firefighters have been battling the blaze and the fire has been brought under control and isn't spreading although a few hotspots remain.

A man has died of his injuries after being shot in Colmars in the Haut-Rhin department. Reports say that an argument broke out between two groups of people yesterday during a barbecue during which a man in his twenties was shot. He died from his injuries this morning.

 

BUSINESS

The Chinese government has released economic data for July which is below expectations and has cut a key interest rate. Retail sales increased by 2.7% compared to a year earlier. Economists had expected a rise of 4.9%. Industrial output was also below expectations and home sales were down by 28.6% as the country pursued it's zero Covid policy.

Discount retailer Aldi has become one of the latest UK businesses to increase pay in the light of rising inflation. It has increased pay for warehouse workers for the second time this year. The company said that the workers would earn up to 9% more than they were earning in January this year, depending on their role and location. 4,200 logistics employees will benefit from the increase.

 

SPORT

Tennis... Andy Murray has returned to the Great Britain Davis Cup team for the first time since 2019. He joins Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans and Joe Salisbury for the group stage of the competition in Glasgow next month.

Rugby Union....Australian player Bryce Hegarty is leaving Leicester Tigers next season to join the Western Force ahead of the start of the Super Rugby season in February. He joined the midlands club from the Queensland Reds last summer.
