President Macron has visited the victims of yesterday's attack in Annecy in hospital in Grenoble and in Annecy. He said afterwards that the news regarding the four injured children is "positive". He mentioned the British child who was injured, saying that the doctors are "very confident" and she is watching television. The Dutch foreign ministry has said that the injured Dutch girl, who was transferred to Switzerland yesterday, is "out of danger". The local prosecutor in Annecy has said that the custody of the alleged perpetrator of yesterday's attack has been extended. Six people, including four children, were injured in the attack. A Syrian national was taken into custody. The local prosecutor said that amongst the victims were a 22 month old child, two children who are two years old and a three year old child. This afternoon the town hall in Annecy announced that a march in support of the victims will be held this Sunday at 11.00am.

French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has said that the price of hundreds of grocery items will fall from next month. He said that seventy five agri-food manafacturers have agreed with the governement to lower the prices of certain products to fight inflation. According to the minsiter, these will include pasta, poultry, cereals and oils. He added that the government will be checking that the businesses have adhered to their commitments and sanctions will be applied if they haven't.

A British man has reportedly been found dead in the port of La Ciotat. The body was found in the port early this morning. According to local reports, the deceased is a man in his twenties from Northern Ireland who was a chef on a boat in the port. Inquiries are continung to try to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

A man has died after being hit by a train. The incident happened early this morning between Marseille and Martigues. Inquiries are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
 

 

BUSINESS

 

Sales on UK high streets have turned negative for the first time in two years, according to research by BDO. In store and online sales combined fell by 1.5% compared with the same period last year. Online sales alone fell by 3.3%.

Ratings agency Moodys has forecast that UK house prices will fall by 10% over the next two years. It said that it beleives a combination of less affordable mortgages and high inflation will bring about a correction in the UK housing market.

The UK government has announced that the windfall tax on oil and gas firms will be suspended if prices fall to normal levels for a sustained period. It said that the windfall tax would remain until March 2028 but that the tax rate would fall if the average oil and gas prices fall to, or below, a set level for two consecutive three-month periods.

 

SPORT

Tennis...Novak Djokovic is into the French Open final after beating Carlos Alcaraz who suffered from injury during the match. With the match at one set each, Alcaraz pulled up early in the third set with cramp. He twice carried on after treatment but Djokovic took full advantage to take a 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1 win. Djokovic will now play Casper Ruud or Alexander Zverev in Sunday's final.

Football... Bayern Munich have signed Konrad Laimer on a free transfer from fellow Bundesliga club RB Leipzig. He joins the club on a four-year deal. The 26-year-old had made 190 appearances for Leipzig since moving from Red Bull Salzburg in 2017.

Chelsea have signed USA forward Catarina Macario for their womens team on a free transfer from French champions Lyon. She joins Chelsea on a three year deal.
