Meteo France have issued a Yellow warning for high temperatures in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes tomorrow from 3am to midnight. Temperatures of 32 are expected in the Alpes-Maritimes and 35 inland in the Var. Meanwhile, many departments in south-west France have been placed on a Meteo France orange warning for storms. Gusts of over 100 km per hour are expected in places, as well as heavy rain and hail.

French minister in charge of Territorial Communities Dominique Faure has announced new measures to combat violence against elected officials. The measures include zero tolerance for those who attack elected officials, the reinforcement of sanctions, the creation of an "aggravating circumstance" for cases of harassment and better information for elected officials on judicial treatment. There will also be improved communication between mayors and public prosecutors as well as the implementation of cross-training between elected officials and magistrates.

French transport minister Clement Beaune has announced the sale of 200,000 SNCF tickets at 19 euros each. He made the announcement using the public address system at the Gare d'Austerlitz in Paris this morning. The tickets, which are limited to certain inter-city trains, are partly financed by the government.

A tribute ceremony has been held in Normandy in honour of Leon Gautier, the last surviving member of the French forces who landed on the beaches on D-Day in June 1944. President Macron, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne and several ministers were present. President Macron said that he was "the embodiment of the spirit of resistance". He also paid tribute to the other members of the commando unit which landed on the beaches, saying that "they were determined to sacrifice their young lives so that ...the history of France continues to be written".

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi has attended a ceremony to honour resistance fighter Jean Moulin, 80 years after his death. The ceremony was held at 22 rue de France, the address at which he established his art gallery.

 

BUSINESS

UK house prices have fallen at their fastest rate in 12 years, according to the Halifax. Prices for June fell for the third month in a row and fell by 2.6% annually.

Production of the Ford Fiesta will end today, bringing to an end one of the most popular car models over the past few decades. Ford is producing the final car in Cologne, Germany before its plant is modified to produce more electric vehicles. More than 22 million Fiestas have been produced globally. It was the UK's best-selling vehicle every year between 2009 and 2020.

UK home shopping TV channel Ideal World has called in insolvency experts, leaving the majority of its 275 staff facing possible redundancy. lt posted a statement on Facebook saying that it has had to temporarily suspend broadcasting and its website.

 

SPORT

Cricket... It's the second day of the Australia against England Test match at Headingley, with England finishing their first innings this afternoon on 237 all out. Australia are in to bat in their second innings early this evening.

Tennis... At Wimbledon today, Czech player Petra Kvitová beat Aliaksandra Aliaksandraŭna 6-2  6-2. American Madison Keys beat Viktorija Golubic 7-5  6-3. Marta Kostyuk beat Paula Badosa 6-2  1-0 after she retired.

Rugby Union... Alun Wyn Jones has joined French club Toulon as cover during the World Cup. The ex-Wales and British and Irish Lions captain has signed a short-term contract with the club to cover squad absences during the World Cup.

Motorsports.. Red Bull took the first two places in first practice for the British Grand Prix. Max Verstappen was first followed by Sergio Perez. Williams driver Alex Albon was third fastest, Fernando Alonso was fourth and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was in fifth place.
