Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been put under formal investigation in connection with the alleged Libyan financing of his election campaign in 2007. After several days of hearings he has been put under investigation for alleged offences of witness tampering and fraud. He has denied any wrongdoing.

A teenage motorcyclist has been seriously injured in an accident in the Alpes-Maritimes. The collision between the 16 year old motorcyclist and a utility vehicle happened during this morning's rush hour on the RN7 in Villeneuve-Loubet. Traffic was badly disrupted while emergency services attended the scene.

Agents at Nice Cote d'Azur Airport have been carrying out reinforced baggage checks on certain flights from non-EU countries. They were checking for prohibited animals and animal products, plants, fruit, vegetables and wood which are prohibited or are without a health certificate. 19 passengers with illicit goods were intercepted, and seized goods included 20kg of meat and animal products and 36 kg of plants, fruit, fresh vegetables, cut leaves and seeds.

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi has presented Alpes-Maritimes Prefect Bernard Gonzalez with a special award prior to him leaving his post. The mayor presented him with the Aigla Nissarda gold level award, saying that through this award, he wanted to show the Prefect the recognition of their fellow citizens and to "tell him how much of a great Niçois he was through his actions".

A Monegasque delegation led by Minister of State HE Pierre Dartout has taken part in the 3rd Summit of the European Political Community, under the Spanish presidency, in Granada. The high-level meeting, brought together 43 Heads of State and Government, the Presidents of the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission, as well as the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. As in previous summits, the objective was to strengthen cohesion, cooperation and dialogue between all European countries. Topics discussed included digital transition, artificial intelligence and current multilateral and geo-strategic issues.

The service area on the A8 motorway between Antibes and Cannes has had a change of name. A ceremony was held to mark the change from the “Aire des Bréguières Nord” to the "Aire de Mougins". Motorway operator VINCI Autoroutes said the change of name is part of an approach to strengthening the anchoring of areas in their territory and will now allow it to directly promote Mougins and the Côte d'Azur by becoming an "advance ambassador" for them on the motorway.

Four local associations are joining forces to run a food collection this weekend. Volunteers from the Restos du Coeur, La Banque Alimentaire, the Red Cross and the Secours Populaire will be accepting food donations at the Carrefour supermarket in Nice Lingostiere today and tomorrow.

 

BUSINESS

New figures released this afternoon have shown strong jobs growth in the United States. The US Labor Department said that the economy added 336,000 new jobs in September, which is almost double the number expected by analysts.

The distributor of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert film says global advance ticket sales have topped $100m. AMC said that demand "has been incredible from the moment it was first announced." The firm says it took less than 24 hours for the movie to beat its record for the highest one-day sales. The film of the Eras tour is due to be released in cinemas in more than 100 countries next Friday.

Tennis... Coco Gauff is through to the semi-finals of the China Open and will face Iga Swiatek. She beat Greek sixth seed Maria Sakkari 6-2 6-4 in the quarter finals. Swiatek reached the semi-finals by beating Caroline Garcia.

In the Premier League this weekend, tomorrow Luton town are at home to Tottenham, Burnley face Chelsea, Everton play Bournemouth, Fulham are at home to Sheffield United, Manchester United play Brentford and Crystal Palace face Nottingham Forest. On Sunday Brighton are at home to Liverpool, West Ham play Newcastle, Wolverhampton face Aston Villa and Arsenal are at home to Manchester City.
