One person has died at a fire in a garage in Antibes. The body of a woman was found in the garage of a house on a road near the Chemin de Sainte-Claude early this morning. The garage was completely destroyed in the blaze. An inquiry has been opened to establish the circumstances of the death.

A man has died after falling onto the tracks at a metro station in Marseille. Reports say that he was initially recsued by bystanders at the station in the 6th arrondissement but later died as a result of cardiac arrest.

Last minute preparations are taking place in Paris this evening for Emmanuel Macron's investiture ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at 11am tomorrow at the Elysees Palace. The President will deliver a speech and review military personnel before 21 cannon shots are fired. He will also receive a necklace chain which, as president, will officially reinstate him as the Grand Master of the Legion d'Honneur.

In Monaco, the Sûreté Publique has said that there has been an increase in scam calls claiming to be from financial institutions. It said that malicious individuals pose as bank advisers and inform people that they have been a victim of fraudulent payments, often involving purchases on the internet. It added that the public should be extremely vigilant and reminded people that under no circumstances should they communicate their usernames or passwords over the phone or even open an attachment to a message on the internet whose origin is unknown. Such attempted scams can be reported to the Monaco police on Monaco 93.15.33.18.

New updated legislation is being introduced in Monaco which aims to strengthen the protection of women's rights in the Principality. For 3 years, the Government Services analyzed nearly 12,000 legal and legislative texts in order to identify expressions that have become, over time, obsolete for legal, semantic or scientific reasons. In total, 85 provisions and texts were subject to modification or deletion. The legislation was adopted by a majority of 18 votes yesterday evening in the National Council.

 

BUSINESS

UK convenience store chain McColl's has gone into administration, putting 16,000 jobs at risk. The company said that its lenders did not want to extend banking agreements that were keeping the business going. PriceWaterhouseCoopers have been appointed as administrators and are expected to look for a buyer for the chain.

In the United States, non-farm payroll numbers grew by a slightly better than forecast 428,000 in April, which is the same as the revised number for March. The unemployment rate was 3.6%.

British Airways owner IAG has reported an operating loss of 731 million euros for the first quarter compared to 1.077 billion euros in the same period in 2021. It said that current passenger capacity plans for the remainder of this year are for around 80% of 2019 capacity in quarter 2, 85% in quarter 3 and 90% in quarter 4, with North Atlantic routes close to full capacity by quarter 3.

Cycling... Mathieu van der Poel has won the first stage of the Giro d'Italia in Hungary. The race got underway in Budapest today and finishes in Verona on 29 May.

Cricket... Ben Stokes has scored the fastest first-class century by a Durham player in the side's match against Worcestershire. The England Test captain hit the ton in just 64 balls.

Football...In the Premier League this weekend on Saturday Brentford play Southampton, Burnley face Aston Villa. Chelsea are at home to Wolves, Crystal Palace play Watford, Brighton play Manchester United and Liverpool play Tottenham. On Sunday Arsenal play Leeds, Leicester play Everton, Norwich are at home to West Ham and Manchester City play Newcastle.
