French Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau has said that he does not believe in what he called “large scale movements”. Speaking on a trip to Clermont-Ferrand this afternoon he said that the so-called “Block Everything” movement, which is due to hold a day of action on September 10 is an “ultra left” movement. He said he had sent telegrams to local prefects asking them to show “the greatest firmness”, adding that there is “no question of strategic sites, infrastructure essential to the life of the country, being blocked”.

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur Regional Health Agency have said that 38 cases of Chikungunya have been detected in the Antibes area, as well as a handful of other cases in other areas of the department. Cases in the Var include 47 around Frejus. The virus is spread by tiger mosquitoes. According to the Agency, to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes it is necessary to eliminate stagnant water in which mosquitoes lay eggs and develop. Certain trains are being disrupted in our region today because of action by staff at ZOU Provence railways. A staff member was assaulted this morning according to the CGT union which has called out its workers in protest. The union said that it's the second assault on staff this week.

Three people have been arrested by the National Police and the municipal police. after a group of pro-Palestinian activists entered a synagogue located on Rue Rossini in Nice. A pregnant woman was jostled, according to the prefecture. The Prefect has assigned the National Police Intervention group to secure the place of worship, which the prefect said will remain there as long as necessary.

Two unions are calling for industrial action by pharmacists in December. If it went ahead, the strike would be from 25 to 31 December.

 

BUSINESS

The European Union has imposed a fine of 2.95 billion euros on Google. The European Commission said that the penalty was because the company had abused its dominant position in the online advertising sector. Google said that it would lodge an appeal and described the decision as “wrong”.

The US jobs market has weakened in August, according to new data released today by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The US economy added just 22,000 jobs in the month with unemployment standing at 4.3%, which is the highest in almost four years.

The Chinese government has imposed provisional tariffs on the import of pork from the EU. It said that the measure was being taken as part of an anti-dumping investigation. The EU commission has disputed the allegations, saying it will take all necessary measures to defend its producers and manufacturers.
