Evening Update Friday 30 August

A woman in her seventies has died after suffering a heart attack while swimming near La Ciotat this morning. This is the best place to stay at the beach at about 10.00 this morning.

An investigation is underway following the death of a woman in Nice. The 60-year-old died from her injuries following an altercation with a 17-year-old girl in Les Moulins District of Nice on July 3rd.

Two bodies have been discovered in Pennes-Mirabeau near Marseille. Police say that it has been shot. Reports say that cleaning staff discovered the bodies when they went into the hotel room. Inquiries are continuing.

An online fundraising effort has been started to help the family who died in Luc-en-Provence. The 39 year old gendarme was based in Nice and died while riding a motorcycle at the circuit on Wednesday morning. An investigation has been opened up by Draugignan.

A teenager has a serious accident in an accident on the A8 motorway this afternoon. The 16 year old was traveling in a light vehicle which crashed on the access road to the Barcelona rest area near Saint-Maximin. The other two people in the vehicle were slightly injured.

The summer heatwave, along with frosts in the spring, appears to have had an adverse effect on French wine production. The Agriculture Ministry has forecast a 12 per cent decrease in wine production this year compared to last year. It’s expected to be 4 per cent below the average of the last five years, but still higher than the harvest of 2017.

The Aix-Marseille metropolis has announced that almost 300km of new cycling paths will be created over the next five years. The new paths are expected to be mostly in the areas of La Ciotat, Saint-Cyr and Gémenos.

The new Maritime Prefect for the Mediterranean will take over next Wednesday. Vice Admiral Laurent Isnard will be based in Toulon.

 

BUSINESS

The Canadian economy has grown faster than expected in the second quarter. Canadian GDP grew by 0.9 percent, its fastest growth in two years. The new figures mean that Canada had the fastest growing economy among G7 nations, with the UK being in last place, contracting by 0.2 per cent.

Retail sales in Hong Kong fell 11.4% last month, compared to last year, the value of sales fell 3.8% compared to the same period in 2018.

In the UK, the number of mortgages approved by lenders hit a two-year high in July, according to figures from the Bank of England. 67,306 mortgages were approved in the month.

Inflation in the Eurozone was 1% in August, according to new figures from the European Central Bank. Meanwhile, new figures show that you can not afford to pay more in Germany by 2.2% in July from the month before, which was worse than expected.

 

SPORT

Cricket ... James Anderson will play no further part in the Ashes against Australia after a recurrence of a calf injury. He is bowled only four times in the first Test and missed the second and third.

Motorsports ... Sebastian Vettel was 0.214 seconds ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc in first practice for the Belgian Grand Prix this morning, with Red Bull Max Verstappen in third. In second practice this afternoon, Charles Leclerc led a Ferrari one-two, with Sebastian Vettel in second and the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas in third. Championship leader Lewis Hamilton was fourth.

Football .. In the Europa League draw, Manchester United faces a 6,000-mile round trip to Astana play in Kazakhstan. They will also play Partizan Belgrade and AZ Alkmaar. Wolves, who are playing in Europe for the first time since 1980, take on Besiktas, Braga and Slovan Bratislava. Arsenal have been drawn against Eintracht Frankfurt, Standard Liege and Vitoria. Meanwhile, Celtic will play Lazio, while Rangers are in a difficult group with Porto.

In the English Premier League this weekend, on Saturday Southampton play Manchester United, Crystal Palace Aston Villa, Leicester play Bournemouth, Manchester City play Brighton, Newcastle play Watford, West Ham play Norwich and Burnley play Liverpool. On Sunday Everton play Wolverhampton and Arsenal play Tottenham.
