Armed Forces Minister Sebastien Lecornu has said that there is now no hope of rescuing the sailor who fell overboard from a French Navy ship early yesterday. He said that "the hope of rescuing Petty Officer Léo Soulas is now nil" and the search has been called off. He served aboard the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and was seconded to the air defense frigate Forbin escorting the aircraft carrier as part of the carrier battle group. It was due to dock yesterday in Toulon, after a five-month mission to the Indo-Pacific.

A gathering in tribute to the teenager fatally stabbed at a school in Nantes has been taking place this afternoon. The meeting is taking place in private inside the school premises. Three other students were also stabbed in the attack yesterday afternoon by a 16 year old pupil, who was arrested shortly afterwards. The local prosecutor held a press conference this evening. He revealed that the victim who died had been stabbed 57 times. The prosecutor has also said that another pupil who was in a serious condition in hospital is now out of danger.

A man has suffered fatal stab wounds after being attacked at a mosque in the Gard department this morning. According to reports, two men were worshiping at the mosque when one attacked the other, stabbing him multiple times.

The Var Prefecture has published the latest data on road accidents in the department. Since January, 10 people have died on the roads: 6 on motorized two-wheelers, 3 in cars and 1 in a cart.

The body of a man has been discovered in the Gardon river in the Gard department. It's believed that it may be that of a man in his seventies who has been missing in the area for the past ten days.

The organizers of the Cannes Film Festival have announced that Charlie Chaplin's classic film The Gold Rush will be presented as a pre-opening film at the Cannes Film Festival on May 13. It will be shown in a restored 4k version. The movie will be re-released worldwide on June 26 to mark its centenary.

 

BUSINESS

California's economy has overtaken that of Japan in size. Governor Gavin Newsom drew attention to the new data from the IMF and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. It shows that the GDP of California reached $4.1 trillion in 2024, exceeding the Japanese GDP of $4.01 trillion.

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves is meeting US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent in Washington, DC today. Speaking to the BBC before the meeting she said that the UK government was working "flat out" to secure a trade deal with the US. However, she suggested that moving closer to the EU on trade was a bigger priority, saying "our trading relationship with Europe is arguably even more important, because they're our nearest neighbors and trading partners."

 

SPORT

Motorsports... McLaren have announced that they plan to leave the all-electric Formula E series at the end of this season. The team entered Formula E in 2022. It said the decision "will allow us to maximize future opportunities for growth across our key markets".

Tennis... Katie Boulter is out of the Madrid Open. She was beaten in today's second round match by Jasmine Paolini. The final score was 6-1 6-2

Skiing....French skier Margot Simond has died at the age of 18 after an accident in training in Val d'Isere. She was preparing for a Red Bull Alpine event this weekend when she suffered a fall. Simond, who was crowned U18 slalom champion in March, was a highly regarded skier in her age category. The French Ski Federation said the skiing community was "deeply affected and saddened by Margot's passing".

Football... It's the FA Cup Semi finals this weekend. Crystal Palace are at home to Aston Villa tomorrow and then on Sunday it's Nottingham Forrest against Manchester City. In the Premier League tomorrow Chelsea play Everton, Brighton are at home to West Ham, Newcastle face Ipswich, Southampton play Fulham and Wolves play Leicester. On Sunday, Bournemouth take on Manchester United and Liverpool are at home to Tottenham.
