Analysis by Sante Publique France has shown that about 33,000 people have died because of heat in the summer from 2014 to 2022. This includes 23,000 people aged 75 or over. 28% of deaths were observed during heatwaves.

In Paris, the search has been suspended for one person who is still missing after the building collapse in the 5th arrondissement. The suspension is because of the risk of a further collapse of the building. The Paris prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to establish the circumstance surrounding the explosion which destroyed the building in the rue Saint-Jacques on Wednesday evening. At the moment, it's thought that it may have been caused by a gas leak. Six people are still in a critical condition with fifty people affected by the explosion in total.

President Macron is expected in Marseille on Monday for a three day visit. It's the longest visit the President has made to Marseille so far. He's expected to unveil the second part of his "Marseille en Grand" plan, first announced in September 2021, which aims to improve security, housing and education in France's second largest city.

The route of the flame for the 2024 Paris Olympics has been announced. It will arrive in Marseille on 8 May next year after a journey by sea from Greece. The flame will end up in Paris on 26 July. In the meantime it will travel through many departments as well as five overseas territories on a journey covering 12,000 kilometres.

Bathing and other water activities have been banned at two beaches in Menton because of bacterial contamination. The beaches of Sablettes and Rondelli in the east of Menton are affected. The town hall said that the bans will be lifted as soon as water analysis has confirmed a return to normal.

 

BUSINESS

Heathrow airport security staff have called off strikes after voting to accept a pay offer. Members of the Unite union were due to strike on 29 days throughout the summer. The union said that workers had voted to accept a pay increase of between 15.5% and 17.5%.

Managers of the UK's largest banks and building societies have met UK chancellor Jeremy Hunt to discuss rising mortgage costs. It was announced that lenders will offer more flexibility to mortgage holders. Borrowers will be able to make a temporary change to their mortgage terms which would allow some to have lower repayments for a short time. Lenders also agreed to a 12-month delay before taking repossession proceedings

 

SPORT

Cricket...Leicestershire player Rehan Ahmed has been added to the England squad for the second Ashes Test. The 18 year old made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi last winter. He has been called up as cover for Moeen Ali, who's struggled with a finger injury. The second Test gets underway at Lord's next Wednesday.

Cycling... Chris Froome has been left out of Israel-Premier Tech's squad for next month's Tour de France. The 38 year old has faced many mechanical issues in the build-up to the Tour. He said that he is physically ready but has suffered equipment issues.
