President of National Assembly - The re-election of Yaël Braun-Pivet as President of the French National Assembly has sparked controversy. The Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP), particularly ecologist Sandrine Rousseau, is calling for all possible legal challenges. Rousseau criticizes President Macron for accepting government resignations, allowing 17 ministers to vote, which led to the defeat of leftist candidate André Chassaigne by 13 votes. Meanwhile, deputies are negotiating the allocation of other key positions, with disputes over the inclusion of the far-right RN party. Chassaigne has condemned the election as a "democratic coup" involving deals with the Republicans.

Christian Estrosi Re-Elected - The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, has been re-elected as the president of the Metropolitan Area of Nice Côte d'Azur with 81.6% of the votes. Estrosi received 93 out of 120 total votes, with 6 blank ballots.

Tour de France Changes - Due to the Tour de France this weekend, several road changes will take place in the Alpes-Maritimes. In Nice, the Pénétrante du Paillon and the Malraux tunnel after the Cimiez exit will be closed on Saturday from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Additionally, all perpendicular roads to the Tour de France stages will be closed, with parking prohibited along the stage routes. The city of Nice advises motorists to use the A8 motorway, the Voie Pierre Mathis, and public transportation.

Fire on a boat in Cannes - A fire broke out on a boat this Friday morning in the Port of Cannes. One man has suffered leg injuries, and his 2 children are safe. The circumstances of the fire are still unknown.

Fatal fire in Nice , One Man Arrested - Following the fatal fire that claimed the lives of seven people on Thursday, July 18th, in the Moulins district of Nice, one man has been arrested and is currently being questioned. CCTV footage shows three unmasked young men breaking into the apartment, spreading gasoline on the staircases of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors, and fleeing minutes before the fire erupted. These suspects are still at large. The incident may be linked to drug trafficking, and an arson investigation has been opened.

Maisons Bel Âge -​ To protect seniors during the heatwave, the Maisons du Bel Âge in Bouches-du-Rhône offer a cool refuge. In Marseille, these centers provide air-conditioned spaces and gentle activities like drawing. The staff also conduct wellness checks on their 36,000 members to ensure their safety. There are 45 such centers, with about 20 in Marseille.

 

BUSINESS
A mass IT outage has affected global institutions, including banks, media outlets such, and airlines. The US state of Alaska, the London Stock Exchange, and Australia have been particularly impacted, with flights grounded, supermarket checkouts disrupted, as well as ABC, Sky News and Ryanair websites being down. The issue is linked to Microsoft PC operating systems, though a Microsoft spokesperson stated that most services have been restored. Australia's cybersecurity watchdog attributed the problem to a third-party software platform, not an attack.

And - Technology stocks worldwide have dropped due to fears about the global chip industry. This follows reports of potential tighter US restrictions on semiconductor equipment exports to China and comments by Donald Trump about Taiwan. The stock market index Nasdaq fell 2.7%, with significant declines in chip stocks across the US, Europe, and Asia. The sell-off was triggered by concerns over increased US restrictions and the potential impact on global chip supplies. 


SPORTS
Football - Manchester United have signed French defender Leny Yoro from Lille until 2029 in a deal worth 62m euros (£52.18m), with 8m euros (£6.73m) in add-ons. The 18-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option for an additional 12 months.

Rugby Union - Props Will Hurd and Nathan McBeth, and lock Ewan Johnson, will make their first Scotland starts against Chile on Saturday.

Tennis - Rafael Nadal's preparations for the Olympics continued with an impressive straight-set win over Britain's Cameron Norrie in the second round of the Swedish Open. Nadal, 38, overcame the fifth seed in Bastad 6-4 6-4 to set up a quarter-final with Argentine Mariono Navone.

Paris 2024 - Japanese gymnast Shoko Miyata has been sent home before the Olympic Games after breaking a team smoking ban. The 19-year-old left Japan's training camp in Monaco on Thursday as officials investigated the alleged incident.
