Inflation in France decreased slightly over one month in December and also over one year, according to data from French government statistics body INSEE. Consumer prices fell by 0.1% from November. Inflation was 5.9% over one year, down from 6.2% in November. INSEE said that the drop in annual inflation is due to the slowdown in energy prices and, to a lesser extent, services.

The rate paid on the Livret A account will increase to 3 per cent from February 1, according to French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire. Speaking on France 2 television this afternoon, the minsiter also said that the rate on the LEP account will increase to 6.1%.

A mobile temporary force consisting of 70 personnel has arrived in the Var to help local police. The Minister of the Interior has made the force available to the department. It provides support to local teams and increases the police presence on public roads as well as pedestrian patrols, in particular in areas such as large urban complexes, city centres and shopping centres. The prefect of the Var, Evence Richard, said that the mobile reinforcement unit "will consolidate the good results recorded in the Var in terms of the fight against delinquency in the last quarter of 2022. "

Gabriel Attal, the French Minister Delegate for Public Accounts has been visiting Nice. He was accompanied by Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi while inspecting works extending the Promenade du Paillon.

Airbnb paid over 2.4 million euros in tourist tax to the municiplaity of Nice in 2022, the third highest level in France, according to the company. Paris was in first place with over 24.3 million euros being paid and Marseille in second place with over 2.8 million. Airbnb said that it paid a total of 148 million euros in tourist tax to French municipalities in 2022 and that nearly 30% of the tourist tax collected in France benefits rural communities with less than 3,500 inhabitants.

 

BUSINESS

The UK economy grew in November, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics. The economy expanded by 0.1%, helped by demand for services in the tech sector and in spite of households being squeezed by rising prices. It said pubs and restaurants also boosted growth as people went out to watch the World Cup.

 

SPORT

Motorsports... Williams have appointed James Vowles as their new team principal. He was Mercedes' director of strategy and was a key figure at Mercedes. Vowles starts his new role on 20 February.

Rugby Union...Ulster fly-half Ian Madigan has been selected for their European Champions Cup away game at La Rochelle. He's one of eight changes from last weekend's match against Benetton. Regular scrum-half John Cooney has been left out, with Ulster saying his absence is due to squad rotation. South African Duane Vermeulen starts at number eight
